So my 13 year old cousin is a diffuse thinner???what gives?

My cousin, who is 13 now, has seen his hair thinned all over dramatically in the past 3 years. Its just not normal. By looking at him...you can tell he hasn't hit puberty. His parents took him to the dr and the dr told them to see a specialist a couple hrs away. The parents are immigrants, don't know much english and think the hairloss is no biggy..."everybody loses hair" . I am on the opposite coast as my little cousin or I would help him. Any of you have any idea on what it could be? I'm thinking he's anemic or something like that, but I would think the dr would have figured that out. Any help is appreciated.

He needs to get his blood work done, I am sure his hair loss is not male pattern baldness related. He is 13, he hasn't even hit puberty yet.
