Success without finasteride?

Has anybody who previously took finasteride and has quit had any good results with alternative regimens?

I quit in February of this year having been on the stuff pretty much for 10 years and since have been looking for a alternative that provides the same results.

I've added Rogaine Foam once a day (mornings) and S5 cream once a day (evenings) plus Nizoral (which I've been using for over 10 years regularly already) followed by Tricomin twice a week.

Let me know any thoughts on how I might improve this regimen - I started on the Rogaine twice a day but got the black eyes and headaches so cut it down. Could be in my head but I feel like I get some sides off S5 too - fuzzy head, hard to concentrate etc - not sure about this stuff but just got another tub of it anyway its not too expensive.

Considered the CB & RU stuff but I just think its too much hassle to start mixing up chemicals like some mad scientist everyday.

I'm in my early 30s now and had basically done very well of maintaining pretty much my natural hairline until the start of this year, but now its been nearly 10 months since I quit finasteride and despite the above new regimen I feel like I'm losing the battle now and the receding hairline is now pretty noticeable and I've had comments.

Advice appreciated guys, cheers

Just wondering why you stopped in the first place? Sides? If so, then how did you stay on it for 10 years before you stopped?

Quit due to sides - sexual sides crept up on me over a number of years, I tried having a break, reducing the dose right down but they always came back. In the end it was becoming too difficult to perform sexually and I also had a reduced sexual appetite.

Since quitting I feel like my life has changed significantly, having been on it for so long I had no idea how much it had effected me until I had quit for over a month and I now feel like a completely different person.

I knew of the sexual side risks but had no idea about the other stuff - but since quitting it is my brain function which has changed so much as well as general energy. I strongly believe that my social anxiety that I had was related to taking that stuff because I had problems for years but since coming off the stuff I can handle situations so much more easily & rationally than before. I also suffered bouts of unexplainable depression, which have now gone completely. My confidence has gone through the roof since quitting and I feel so much more up for life and like I've got my mojo back & that's even with me losing a bit of hair than normal! Couldn't really give a $hit about losing my hair anymore I just want to feel as healthy as possible, my hair comes secondary to that no question

Coming off that stuff is the best thing I've ever done, but at the same time it does work in keeping your hair! I just didn't relate taking the stuff to a lot of the problems I was having at all but since quitting I've noticed such a change & I've read quite a bit on this site of others in the same situation.

Kudos to you, man.

I don't believe that I have sides...but every time I read a post like this I think to myself "I wonder...have I changed slowly over time and just not realized it...?" Kind of like how you can put a frog in a pan of water on the stove, then slowly heat it up and he'll boil alive because he doesn't realize the slow changes. Dunno, but right now I like having my hair :)

I'm also interested in seeing if topical only approach can work for me. i'm having massive brain fog / anxiety / depression issues recently and i've been on finasteride for 4 months.

The mental numbness starts about an hour after taking the pill and usually goes away in 10 hours or so. So for example, I'll take 1.25 of finasteride before work, be foggy all day, get out of work and hit the gym and finally feel normal by the time I get home that night. Rinse and repeat... not a great way to live. I haven't made any new relationships with anyone over the past 4 months... and have been rapidly drifting away from my circle of friends and family. I can't even pick up a phone anymore when it rings... I always let it go to voicemail in fear of talking to someone...

I'm worried that spironolactone will also give me brain fog since it inhibits 5AR. are there any known cases of this? Also, does it work? Will I be able to keep the strong hairs I've grown while on finasteride?

You could try Proxiphen, which the doctor who designed it claims is "unquestionably more effective than Propecia alone".

Where did you hear that spironolactone inhibits 5a-reductase? Personally, I've seen conflicting results on that in the medical literature. I've seen one study that claims that it does inhibit 5a-reductase, and another study that claims that it doesn't do that. I don't know which is correct.

You don't need to do it everyday, and it's easy.

OMG..you mean the Dr. who designed it and sells it said that? There must be tons of evidence for that statement. And since you're constantly asking others for evidence..I'm sure it'll be in your next post :dunno:
