Sudden Hairloss Over 9 Months (college Student)

Okay,

So for most of my life I've been a healthy, active individual (sports: football, track, wrestling). I graduated high school in the Spring of 2015 with all of my hair... unfortunately, due to a financial situation I sat out of college during the school year of fall 2015 - spring 2016, where I mainted a part time job and constantly worked out at a local LA Fitness. During this entire time, my hair remained intact. The first image is in July of 2016 (hair remained intact). I was set to move into college August 2016. Before August 2016, I decided to start fresh and cut my hair low for school (2nd image) and my hair was perfectly fine.

Well after moving into college, I'd say about 2 months in (October 2016) I began to realize I was losing hair really bad!! As you can see in 3rd-8th photos...it only progressed. I'd like to emphasize that my college is not in my home state. When I switched to college, I began complaining to my parents that the water seemed hard (it would burn my skin at times) and that I was losing hair...they said it was stress and that it would come back. I decided not to stress it, and give it a chance, but it continued to get worse.

Well around March of 2017, my university let out for Spring break and I chose to visit a dermatologist. When I visited the dermatologist, she did a scalp biopsy and in the meantime, recommended I use clobetosol and rogaine until results came back. 2 weeks later, I visited the dermatologist again, and she informed me that my hairloss wasn't genetic and that I did have some inflammation on my scalp, HOWEVER she didn't really go into detail.

So I continued to use both, and the results were great (as you can see in the 9th photo)...however, the rogaine irritated my scalp and would get scaly and leave behind white residue. I stopped use after one month because of these symptoms and I also began to get bad headaches.

On July 4th, I shaved my head really low...about a 1/8 guard on the clippers. As you can see, my hairline has gotten worse and I have recently began to thin only in the middle of my head. I went to another dermatologist for a second opinion on yesterday ( July 26, 2017) and she says that she believes I have male pattern baldness plus a crossover between Inflammation of the scalp. However, I tried to inform her the other dermatologist said it wasn't male pattern baldness after the scalp biopsy. She prescribed me doxycycline hyclate (a very strong antibiotic) to try and help with the inflammation and bumps on my scalp because I told her my father said it could possibly be a fungal infection. It should get here in about the next week, and I'll try to keep you all posted on the results.

I'm really at a loss for words because both men on my father's and mother's side have/had all of their hair. If anyone has any insight as to what could possibly be going on, please feel free to comment. Since this has been happening, it has been a major confidence killer and it's very depressing. In my opinion the hair doesn't thin this fast even in regular male pattern baldness victims, however I don't know much about it. Did I catch it early enough or was I too late? I'm only 20 years old, and October 2016 - July 2017 is a very short time frame in my opinion.

Hey man,

Sorry to hear this is happening, it also started in college for me. I also thought it was stress/infection/low vitamin d levels/whatever, and I also tried a bunch of natural supplements for months and nothing improved.

While in many cases hair loss is slow and gradual, there are exceptions (like mine) where it is very quick and aggressive. Typically when you are diffuse thinning (rather than retaining thickness everywhere else and just receding on the edges of your hairline), the hair loss will be much faster unfortunately. It does look like male pattern baldness though, which means that finasteride + minoxidil are your current options at the moment. While you are only 20, finasteride may be a difficult decision to make, as I believe you are still developing at this age. I started taking it at 24, and my hair loss started at 22.

However, i think if you start it at micro-doses, you should be ok, and I wouldn't worry about side effects as the percentages are very low for them to occur.

Last picture shows male pattern baldness 100%, I would say getting on finasteride asap would be the best option for you if you're willing to start treatment.

Sorry to say, but that's very advanced and rapid hairloss.

Typical male pattern baldness + diffusing.

You need to start finasteride if you want to save your hair.

Thanks for your replies guys! Also down the middle is where my scalp has the inflammation. And I have vellus hairs on my hairline if that matters in any way
