I noticed my hair was thin about 9 months ago and over the past month it was looking so thin I had to shave it off as I felt it looked a bit out of place being so thin.

I've shaved it off now but there are still patches of less hair on the top on both sides.

The top area has all thinned out by about 50% in less around a year.

I read it was fairly rare for hair to thin out in men so I'm worried it might be another cause, possibly due to damp conditions in my flat and mould grows quite freely on things so I was worried it might be ringworm (not a worm but the affect of toxins in mould) but I also read this is only common in very young children.

My doctor suggested it could be a low folic acid level in my blood but recommends it is simple pattern baldness.

I was surprised to see the rapidity of the loss especially as my dad still has very thick hair along with the irregular patches and itchyness.

I was wondering if anyone else could have a suggestion as to what possible cause this could be other than pattern baldness as I find it so surprising that I could lose half in a year and when baldness does not occur in any but one person of my extended family.

Best way to find out what's going to is to see a dermatologist, it could literally be something like you said and fully repairable, or it could be male pattern baldness.

You got the pattern, sorry broski but you're diffusing. You don't need a Doctor to tell you you have male pattern baldness
