Survey about early hair loss

To everyone who had significant hair loss before the age of 24, how old were your parents when they had you?

Same question to everyone who started loosing their hair in their 30's or later.

I'm wondering if people who's parent's had them at an older age, like 30, have male pattern baldness much earlier than men whose parent's had them at say, age 21.

Please state when you hit NW2.5 and how old your parents were when you were born, and maybe state when your relatives went bald. There are people on here with now relatives that were bald.

Hi CollegeChem, this is interesting, just like a census.

My dad was 35 and my mom 32 when they had me, so that is older. I had my first bout of hair loss at 21 & I hit NW2 when I turned 27 but it's a difficult diffuse hair loss that follows no particular pattern. My dad never lost a hair until he turned 50, my mom's family have no history of inherited hair loss at all, though she developed a hypothyroid condition when she turned 60 and lost a lot of hair because of that.

My grandparents all died young with full heads so I don't know whether they would have been destined for baldness if they'd lived.

None, absolutely none, of my other relatives have thin or thinning hair. Just me.

Both my parents were 33 when they had me. I didn't really notice baldness in pictures of my dad until he was about 32.

I hit 2.5 last year when I take a look at pictures. I noticed my hairline was receding after my first year in high school. I now have thinning in my frontal hairline and a cowlick going thin now.

My relatives and grandfathers went bald in their late 20's. I think maybe with a not so good diet I think it started or stress triggered the process to start.

My parents were 36 when they had me. They had my brother when they were 42 and he lost his hair really quick.....he was probably a NW6 by his early 20's.

Wow, interesting thread.

My dad: 31.
My mum: 30.

My maternal grandfather went thin in his 20's, and completely bald in his 50's.

My paternal grandfather receded in a typical pattern, beginning in his 40's.

My dad had obvious signs of thinning in his 30's, balding in 40's, and is now a Norwood 4/5.

Genetically, I'm screwed.

My older brother is really thin up top, and about 80% bald. A Norwood 3/4, he has no hairline, extreme temple thinning (a small island thousands of miles from the shore), and hardly any hair on the vertex or crown...

Sad.

Dad had me when he was 31, mom was 30.

Looking back at pictures I'd say my dad was a Norwood 2 ever since he was 35 or so. He's still a Norwood 2 and he's 51 now. I hope to god I can have his stabilization.

My parents had me when they were both 35.

However, im very close in age to one of my brothers, and he has a huge head of thick, wiry, curly hair.

My other brother is a fair bit older than me, so they had him when they were younger, and he has a big receding hairline. Same pattern as mine is outlining, but more advanced. His hair is thicker in general than mine, though.

so for the first vote;

my uncle is 7 years older than my father and is a NW2 or maybe 3. my father is a nw4. so there is a same genetics pair in which the one who was born later is not only balder, but balder at a younger age.

now of course we don't know if any affairs happened with anyone's parents, so i hope that does not mess up the results of this survey.

with the exception of your dad's oldest brother, it looks like the younger brother's are generally bald, showing an age effect and not just a genetic effect. When did your father's oldest brother go bald?

When you said your brother is 5, you mean't 5 years older, right?

My father was 35 and mother 30 yr old. So yeah, kinda "old". I've never had very thick hair so I should've seen this coming.

i'm 20, hit nw2.5 right when i hit 18

now i'm nw3 and diffuse all over the top really thinning in nw6-7 pattern, it looks grim for me with already an obvious balding spot in back. I've got a 26 y/o cousin who is almost completely bald on my dad's side. 3 of the 5 on my dad's side are completely bald. My dad is getting really thin up top (he's the oldest of the siblings and he's 52) but has good hair for his age and another uncle is following the same pattern as my dad with a small bald spot in back so eventually it will be 5 of 5 baldies on my dad's side. Everyone guy on my mom's side is bald.
i'm completely screwed.

2 older brothers

the 25 y/o one is balding but i am much more bald than he is (we resemble eachother in looks)

the 22 y/o one is not losing any hair at all (he looks nothing like me or my older brother)

mom was 30 dad was 32 when they had me

It is a common fact that many hollywood stars wore toupees even back in the day, so... you could well be right.

I gotta tell you, I live in a small city and when I visited the Finnish capital Helsinki last weekend I saw a helluva lot young balding dudes there. Dunno why it seems that there's more young balding guys there than here in my hometown. Also couple of weeks ago I went to see a Guns N' Roses concert there (Helsinki) and noticed just the same, lots of naturally balding shaved dudes. I guess we Finns are doomed 'cause the "gene pool" here is pretty small, if you know what I mean.

P.S. I'd like to add to my previous reply that I probably started thinning at 21 or so. Now I'm 23 and pretty f*****g diffused on top. My twin brother has exactly the same pattern of hairloss although his hair type is completely different than mine (a lot thicker and a bit darker). We don't look the same at all. My maternal grandfather was a receder and was a NW3 at 35 or so, and went slick bald eventually. My mother has got like 8 brothers or so and only ONE of them is bald. Not one of my cousins is balding, only me and my bro. My parental grandfather died with a full head of really thick, black hair, only mild grayness on the sides. My father has still got hair and he is 59. He probably was a NW3 until diffusion kicked in a couple of years ago. His hair is black, mine is light brown. My brother's hair is brown. So I couldn't have guessed that I'm genetically doomed but I guess I am.

more young people balding?

I've seen plenty of posts where the older brother is balding more than the younger bother. It seems that the majority of the time, the younger brother is the baldest one. However, an even greater majority of the time, balding people have plenty of relatives who bald young.

I it seems that 75% of the people here are the younger brother. This seems a bit odd because I would think that if the older brother balded first, he might not notice it or know what to do until it was too late. I would expect that if the older brother balded first, the younger brother would have time to notice and worry and come to this sight, and that 75% of balding men here would say that there older brother balded first. Does that make sense, or do you think the oldest would definitely notice his balding and be just as likely to come here?

I heard that 25% of 25 year olds are at least NW2.
