I've read advice suggesting use of both of these before applying Nizoral. Which one to use & why? Thanks!

Depends what country you live in! In the UK T/Sal has been renamed T/Gel. What you need is a shampoo that contains SALYCILIC ACID. In the UK, T/Gel which used to contain coal tar, now contains salycilic acid and T/Sal has been discontiuned. In some countries T/Sal is still available. The name of the shampoo is not important - just make sure it contains salycilic acid because it is this that exfoiliates the scalp and aids absorption of Nizoral.

So coal tar is no good?

I think it makes my hair look a little thicker..

Some shampoos work for some people, and yet ruin other people's hair.

Every scalp is different. You need to experiment to find what works for you.

In Australia, T/Sal has been discontinued -- but they now have a T/Gel Conditioner that has salycilic acid in it. So you can use the coal tar T/Gel for shampooing and the salycilic T/Gel for conditioning.

I read an article (I don't remember from where or what) that says coal tar is carcinogenic. People at one time sued Neautrogena and Walgreens for having Coal Tar shampoo.

That's just what I heard. I wonder if it has any cancerous effect on the scalp? Probably not.

I tried using Nizoral for a couple months and my hair just got too dried out and wispy no matter how much I conditioned it. I just hope I am not missing out too much on its hair loss benefits.

Nizoral did the same to my hair, left it feeling very dry and straw-like after a few applications. Moisturizing shampoos did nothing.

Well, after some good advice from my hairstylist and some experimentation, I realized that my hair wasn't feeling dry because it was dried out, it felt dry because the Nizoral was leaving buildup in it. This is why the moisturizing shampoos weren't helping... because, as moisturizing shampoos by their very nature leave buildup in your hair in an attempt to coat them in oil, they were actually making the buildup problem WORSE, and when I would dry my hair, it was a husk-ish feeling mess.

My hairstylist suggested using a chelating or clarifying shampoo, which is hairstylist talk for a shampoo designed to remove buildup from cosmetic products in your hair.

Worked like a charm! The minute I rinsed the chelating shampoo from my hair, it felt soft as a baby's once again.
