Through which mechanism does Finestaride regrow hair?

I've never understood how anti-androgens like Spironolactone and DHT inhibitors like Finestaride regrow hair without the simultaneous use of growth promoters like minoxidil. Can somebody explain this to me? I understand that they can prevent further loss, by preventing DHT from affecting hair follicles, but people on these forums talk about Finestaride induced regrowth, etc. Is that because they are also using minoxidil? Is it at all possible to generate regrowth with either an anti-androgen or DHT inhibitor alone, without the use of a growth promoter?

I don't understand how a follicle that has already been compromised by DHT can be helped to regrow hair without something like minoxidil. Is it because it can "heal" when DHT is no longer affecting it?

I ask because I'm a 29 year old female who may be suffering from telogen effluvium or Androgenetic Alopecia, not sure yet. I've been prescribed Spironolactone and am interested in knowing if the spironolactone, in conjunction with a birth control pill containing ethinyl estradiol, will actually help regrow hair, or if it will just help stop further loss and something else needs to be incorporated to generate regrowth.

Sorry so redundant just trying to make my question clear.

A hair that has been compromised by DHT will in essence being to "heal" as soon as DHT is inhibited . The hair will shed and make way for a newer healthier hair. And with each new hair cycle a fuller thicker strand should replace the previous hair. That's why taking finasteride or any other DHT inhibitor takes at least 6-12 months before any noticeable results can be seen.
