Useless dermatologists, causing more depression and anxiety

Ok guys this is my story…..I saw a dermatologist today, which had no concern at all about my skin condition which effects my hair loss. He was useless and ignorant. He spent exactly five minutes with me, not a second more. I think they all like that, that’s my own experience with them.
He did not put any effort examining my skin with his hands to get a better understanding what I was trying to tell him. I told him that my concern is sebum on my skull, he told me its cause by infection like bacteria (oh thanks for sharing with me a**h**, I get better informative explanation with more knowledgeable and caring people at gourmetstylewellness.com)
I found him under my health insurance company which suppose to be very good dermatologist. I asked him is there something can be done permanently to cure this infection, he said no to me. Only thing he prescribe to me is some kind of foam EVOCLIN. I am very depressed; I have anxiety attacks and etc because of my skin condition and hair loss. I just hate waking up everyday and face the world. I don’t want to sound desperate, just to gain more attention from hair loss community board. I already spent so much money and time because of all this, I just wish if someone can refer me to great dermatologist. Is there laser treatment for my condition? Please help me ..Dermatalogist that i saw today is Dr. Dmitry Khasak
Sorry to be annoying…

Dude, I really do appreciate your feedbacks…I am willing to travel anywhere, as long as I can get some results and control my sebum infection. I hope your derm is people person, and has human touch with her patients. Does she takes insurance, I have United Health plan. Thanks again buddy

Had to chime in on this one. My Father is a Derm in St. Louis and a very respected one at that. I think he has wrongly diagnosed my hairloss as Telegen Effluvium and I can't really get a second opinion here because all Derms know him and defer to him. My Father has been practicing for a long time and says he has diagnosed at least 1000 cases of Telogen Effluvium and never been wrong. My receeding hairline tells me that he may be wrong on this one, unfortunately, but the thing that bothers me the most when I ask him about treatment is that he only knows what he's read on the Propecia product insert and we're talking about a very respected Dr. So in my research to find the best Derm possible with respect to hairloss I came up with Dr. Elizabeth Hughes, Associate Chief, Clinical Instructor, Santa Clara Valley Med Center, Stanford University. I think the number is 408-885-6777, but I may be wrong. I know it is a long way from NYC, but I may just see you there.

re:

Respected dermatologist and he knows nothing about Propecia? I think there may be some bias in your opinion of your father's work skills.
If you think you are going bald, see some receeding and hair falling out, it is a 99% chance you have male pattern baldness. Telogen Effluvium is so rare............

He knows the Propecia product insert pretty well and he knows that the patients he prescribes it for come back and seem to speak well of it, but there is much more to be learned here from people that take the drug and talk about its effects. I now know more about Propecia than he does, I guarantee. I may have bias, but I think it is about a mentality that many doctors, especially older, experienced doctors have, which I find somewhat arrogant. He believes I have Telogen Effluvium because my hairloss was first noticed by me in the form of a lot of shedding that coincided with the worst event in my life that resulted in the most stress/anxiety/depression that I have ever experienced. Also, his sister, my aunt, went through a bad Telogen Effluvium when she was about my age and male pattern baldness has never been in my family before (with the exception of my brother). He is still positive that my hair will be growing back within a year, I am not so sure.

I have not been happy with the dermatolgistic commuity based on my personal experiences, friends and family experiences and reading forums like this. That being said, any derm should know propecia front to back for the sole reason that they are prescribing it to patients. I am sure he is a gret father, but he is acting irresponsibly in my opinion.
As far as your situation, it is a tough call. Having your father tell you it is Telogen Effluvium, having a family history and the recent life trauma, I guess it seems like you may not be balding. I can tell you that my father is 55 with very little hairloss and both my grandfathers and 90% of my uncles and older cousins have absolutely no hairloss and I am receeding badly at 25, so I do not know what to tell you. I do know that I went through the thought process that I had Telogen Effluvium not male pattern baldness and even rationalized a bunch of reason why it really was Telogen Effluvium, but my research just indicated that Telogen Effluvium was so rare not to mention the fact that so many people misdiagnose themselves and wait too long to get the finasteride and propecia in them. I would wait a few months and see how you feel. I wish you well..

Dude, Thanks but its way to far for me...I already wasted all my days from work on local dermatologist.... If I take more days off, I will defiantly get fired.

Well, my trip to a dermatologist was great! I had read all the articles on propecia and hairloss so I was armed and ready for discussion -- and to get get a proscar script and not for propecia.

She first suggested Minoxidil, and I said I had read the studies and I was not convinced about real efficacy (though I realize there have been later studies that were quantifiable, the original were qualatative studies). Please don't flame me, I didn't want minoxidil :)

She then asked if I realized that propecia won't grow hair, just maintain? I said yes that is fine as my hair is still like a norwood 1 which is fine with me.

Then I explained I wanted Proscar script, and I would split the pill. I explained the huge cost differnce, and she said fine...no problem. Wrote a script for 1/4 a pill per day. :)

I don't necessarily disagree with your opinion, but what exactly do you think doctors need to do to know a drug backwards and forwards? They have drug reps from the companies and they read the information published by the makers of the drugs, esentially the product insert. In the end they tow the drug company's line, because they know the drug companies have to meet the government's approval with trials, etc. I really don't think he knows much less about Propecia than 90% of the Derms out there, but he doesn't benefit from people such as us talking about our experiences with the drugs and he's not on the cutting edge of hairloss research as most Derms are not.

I am glad you had a positive experience with your Derm and I don't mean to be sour on all Derms, but I believe that I have a little bit of insight here and that is all I am trying to lend here. BUT, your Derm sounds just like my Father. How many times have I read in these forums that some people are GROWING some hair on Propecia. The same thing goes for Minoxidil. Most Derms, my Father included, will tell you that Minoxidil does not work for the hairline. They say this because it wasn't initially tested on the hairline and so therefore the product can not claim to work on the hairline, but I just read a study on gourmetstylewellness.com the other day that proved that it does work on the hairline. You would never know that from talking to most Derms. That's all I am trying to point out.
