Using minoxidil as 'insurance' / general growth

Hi.

I just turned 26. I'm honestly not sure I'm balding (yet), but it seems to run in the family some. My dad's side is fairly clear - the only balding I can think of is his diffuse thinning in back, which I haven't noticed yet in me. None of his male siblings have any kind of early hair loss than I can remember.

I have far fewer points of reference on my mom's side. My mom was an only child, and her dad was also an only child. He was pretty bald in the crown and had some significant hairline recession when he died. Of course, he also had leukemia, kidney failure, and a whole HOST of health issues which may have contributed some.

As far as I go, my hairline's kind of odd. It's definitely a mature hairline. I'm pretty good in the forelock. Left temple is thinning slightly (no recession, just a little thinning.) Right temple is more bare, a bit further than two finger widths up from the highest crease of my browline and there's a fairly significant patchy area. This is what I'm most worried about.

My parents and friends think I am certifiably insane, but this is only because I have long hair that reaches down to my eyebrows (bangs). They haven't done the research or worrying that I have. In addition, I'm a musician and I feel my stage image is important, and I want to preserve it.

I've got a cowlick along with a slight bald spot in back, but that was sustained when I was about 9. I banged my head against the bottom of a piece of playground equipment, cut myself, and bled a little bit and there's a small scar. I don't think we can blame that one on DHT, just my general klutziness. ;) I've had it all my life, even since before puberty.

I guess what it comes down to is.. I've been mulling over getting Rogaine from Walgreens, for two main reasons:

1.) Insurance. If there is any potential hairloss in my future, I'm hoping I can arrest it now by just plunking down for Rogaine right now, giving myself peace of mind, and hopefully keeping any latent hair loss from occuring. I've got the time and money and inclination to buy it and apply it on schedule.

2.) Vanity. My hair is fine and coarse, which I got from my mom. Is there any chance that using Rogaine would thicken my hair in general, even if it's not "thinning" by most standards? I'd love to have thicker, more easily styled hair than I do.

Thanks for listening. If this is a bad idea for any reason, please let me know before I start. I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

I should add that the hairs growing out of my "bad" temple are still thick and as long as the rest of my bangs.. there's just.. fewer of them. They don't appear miniaturized.

You just said the Magic Words which usually draw a response from me. I think it's important for you to understand that the best available evidence seems to suggest that topical minoxidil doesn't really "arrest" hairloss. All it does is give you a little more hair than you WOULD have had without it, while balding continues on its inexorable path.

If you truly want to "arrest" hairloss, use Propecia or Avodart.

Okay, I did a bit more googling tonight and that definitely seems to be the case. Thanks for drawing my attention to it.

Propecia doesn't really do much for temples anyhow, though, right?

It helps. It can't stop the most agressive balding, often in the temples, but it helps slow it down, and might stop it there if you are lucky. Definitely give it a go. Besides: loss does not stop at the temples. It keeps going. Better to start early.

As for Bryan and Avodart, um, yeah Avodart is much better for your hair than propecia. And in the 6 month studies the side effects reported were not frequent or large. But if you are going to reduce serum DHT levels by 94%, I'd hope your body does not need DHT for something. Maybe Avodart is the smart pill, but I'd rather do Propecia. There's guys on here who do avodart with great results and no sides though. I prefer to just get my extra protection from Nizoral.
