Using minoxidil on temples only

I've never used minoxidil because I've heard stories about it making people's hair fall out all the time.

But is it worth buying some and using it on only my receded temples only and nowhere else on my head?

or is that pointless? ie. minoxidil can't stimulate dead follicles

It has a better chance at reviving crown follicles according to studies. There's little chance it'll do much for dead temple follicles. Maybe if the follicles were still kinda there, but unlikely because temple follicles are the weakest follicles in the body, I think even with some females. But, you should try it out anyway if you're really curious (for your temples).

Min does cause hair to fall out, but that's a good sign just so you know. When you experience a high shed while using min/finasteride, it means your follicles are getting bigger.

but are Temple follicles dead, or just dormant? could minoxidil stimulate dormant follicles to grow again?

There are lots of users in the forum who have achieved some sort of temple regrowth on minoxidil, so it may work for you...

I've been using it for 8 months now, and it hasn't really made any difference to my temples. I'm not after regrowing what's gone, I just wanted to reinforce my temples, but the miniaturised hair I have hasn't turned into terminal hair yet.

I just had the odd hair sprout here and there, but nothing cosmetically noticeable. I could argue that it's helped me maintain, but that's about it.

So is minoxidil the best to the temples?

I also have lots of vellus hair in my temples.

I'm thinking in trying there spectral dnc-l or minoxidil

vellus hairs must be easier to grow back than no hairs, so it's worth a shot.

I don't have any hairs on my temples - the follicles are gone.... :(

:(

I need to agree that hair loss is complicated.

I'm a norwood 3 and i'm only 21 years old, but i see there are people worse than me.

I'm currently applying minoxidil in my temples, let's see how it works.

I started using minoxidil on my temples about 3 months ago. So far the hairs have stopped falling out, probably to soon to claim I'm gaining anything, but they have stopped falling out for sure. I'm 22 so hopefully you'll be as lucky(?) as I have been so far.

Not sure if minoxidil alone can grow a significant amount of hair on the temples, but in my case, a combination of minoxidil, finasteride, and nizoral filled in my temples nicely.

Like finasteride, min is intended for crownal and top vertex hair loss, but depending on the level of temple follicle sensitivity you can treat those as well.

how bad where your temples before treatments and how long had they been that way before starting to treat them?

did they get worse before getting better? sheddings?

My temples weren't too bad on the Norwood scale (I was probably a nw2). However, I was thinning so much that you can see "the island" in the front. As soon as I noticed the island, that's when I started the treatments.

By about the 3rd week on minoxidil, I went through a huge shed. Wouldn't leave the house without a hat on. The thinning made me look like a nw3, but the good thing was that it only last about a week.

Around the 6th month, that's when I really started noticing a huge difference in my hairline/temples and by 14th month, that's when it reached its full potential. I was only expecting to go back to being a nw2 with thicker hair, but lucky for me, I went back to being a nw1 with thicker hair. I went back to having the hair I had 8 years ago.

I've tried it and it worked for me, but i quit due to side effects. Minoxidil was one of the first things i used to treat my hairloss. I got results after a month and half to two months. Even the 2% version gave me regrowth but at a much slower rate. Its no mirracle cure, but it is impressive. I got hair that was 2mm long on my hair line to 12mm (1.2cm). Thats not bad considering i'd some times only use it once a day.

balbo your story was awesome! i really need to start on propecia.

About applying the minoxidil, you use foam or liquid? Because if you cover all your head you use 4x the recommended!

I had to quit because it gave me a severe dry, itchy scalp similair to that of sceriosis. I tried nizoral to counter this, but it didnt work for me as it was that bad. I also got funny comments from people which got too embarrassing. In the end i decided it wasn't worth it. My hairloss wasnt even that severe at the time so i decided it wasnt worth it. I was less than a norwood 2 back then but more a norwood 1. So it was a reasonable choice for me at that time. Different story now though lol. I might try it again but with a different non irritable brand.

I use liquid... and I only use it on my hairline and temples so I'd only use about a third of the recommended dosage.

Personally, I don't see what all the hype about foam is about. It cost more, you end up using more than the recommended dosage, it's messier, and it's harder to apply. The only plus that I found was that it wasn't itchy.

souds like you had a great response to minoxidil...

did you see regrowth in areas of your scalp where you hadnt had any hair for 8 years?

Im about a Norwood 2.5 maybe.. Ive tried to fight this one without the help of minoxidil but my temples and hairline would benefit from minoxidil.. Im just put off by the usuals..( sheddings I might not recover from, face bloating, etc)

I might respond very well to it and grow a significant amount of hair.... the only way to know is to try it...

My experience has been that minoxidil on the temples is more about maintenance than regrowth. I wouldn't expect to see any significant regrowth on the temples unless you are in that lucky 1-2% that seem to respond in that area.

My temples continued to receed while on finasteride so I decided to add foam once per day just on the temples. I had a nasty shed about 3 weeks in which thinned out the hair, but it all came back, and I don't think I've lost anymore ground on the temples since I've been on finasteride (just over a year now).

Yeah it grew some hair on my temples where I didn't have hair there for maybe 10 years. But unfortunately those were tiny peach fuzz hair and they didn't last long, so maybe that doesn't count.

However, my overall frontal hair never looked that in 8-10 years. Hairline went down, temples filled in nicely (not completely, but better than expected), and the whole front thickened up. Wish I took before pictures to show the change, but I can tell you that I was getting many comments on how thick my hair was during that time.

btw, as you can tell, I'm talking in the past tense, meaning I lost almost all the gains I made on that regimen :( . Unfotunately for me, switching from finasteride to dutasteride for a year was a huge disaster.

Oh and I wouldn't worry too much about any potential side effects. Those usually go away in time and if they don't, then you can always drop it then and it'll disappear eventually. I know some people complain about never recovering from sheds, but if that indeed happens, then it's very rare. For most people it regrows hair and for the rest, it just doesn't work... it won't make things worse, so you have nothing to lose.
