1. For the most part, people who are not experiencing balding have healthy thick hair which does not look "thin" under any sort of lighting provided it is not shaved. Of course some people may have naturally very fine hair, but as a general rule if you notice that you hair is starting to look "bad" under certain types of lighting or outside in the sun, you may be starting to lose it.

2. Also if your hair can no longer hold a style very well then you may be thinning.

You can lose up to 50 percent density before it really starts to be noticeable but by that time it is an uphill battle to stop the loss and even more of an uphill battle to try to regain hair, so take these tips to notice it as soon as you can.

My warning signs were; my hairs committing suicide and diving off my head and onto my very sensitive nose and face... And of course there was this: My co-workers pointing and laughing at my "sparse" area up top and saying "Ha ha! You're going bald dude!" Usually these are VERY useful signs of early hair loss...

Yeah the real question becomes what can you really do about it? Not much actually. Take finasteride or accept it. Not an easy choice since many doctors are reluctant to prescribe finasteride to men for cosmetic issue.

for me, it was my temple thinning, but the biggest concern was when my hair would be itchy in the area it was falling, and when i pulled on it, it would fall out where the itch was.

To add onto OP, excessive shedding is a good sign as well.
