Hey guys just looking for a bit of advice before going for free consultations - any ideas what Norwood I am?

I'm 34 and would like a better front hairline and also fuller crown area.

Thanks in advance

Baldy

Looks like an NW4... You would need a couple of sessions and to exhaust all of your available grafts, depending on your hair type and donor reserves, it is possible you could get a decent result. You should get on finasteride and minoxidil first though, try to regrow as much as possible and stabilize your hair loss.

See, this is where the field of hair loss I think is so limited. I don't really believe that the risks of transplant etc are worth it because if you have the crown and temples transplanted and the rest goes then it will look silly. Im no expert but that's just how I see it. Yes, 'medication' may allow him to keep the rest for many years..but the mey word I just used is 'may'. Nobody knows how well it would work or whether he would get side effects.

Yes... That is the biggest problem with hair transplants today... If you're completely bald, then hair transplants won' give you enough coverage or density to look like you have a normal head of hair. And if you still have most of your hair then you can get a hair transplant and get great results to fix a receding hairline or thinning crown, but there's no guarantee that the medications will maintain the rest of your hair long term, and if they don't, then hair transplants can leave you with ridiculous tufts and lines of hair when the native hair thins and stops growing.

Anyone getting a hair transplant at lower Norwood levels needs to accept that they may need to shave their head later in life if the meds stop holding hair loss at bay, or they may need to wear a hair system. The thing is, if you go bald then you're going to have to shave your head anyway, with or without ridiculous tufts or lines of transplanted hair so in my opinion, you may as well get it done, enjoy it while you can because you're going to have to shave when your hair starts to thin anyway, with or without a hair transplant.

We also don't know what the future holds, Replicel, Histogen, that Italian lotion... They may actually work (not betting on it, but who knows?). Wouldn't you kick yourself if you missed out on the opportunity to enjoy having good hair when you're young for fear of looking ridiculous when you're older only to find that new treatments actually work and maintain hair?

The way I see it, if you really start to lose your hair, you're ****ed either way, so may as well look good while you can, in your youth.

As an aside, OP, you really should shave your hair, you're past the stage where you should be growing hair out and attempting a hair style, shaving is the only option at NW4...

Appreciate the comments and opinion on shaving.

Obviously never wanted to be one of those that clings on for dear life but I habve shaved my head before and I look 100 times worse. Circular head doesn't help.

I'm assuming that the integrity of a good hair doctor would be enough to tell me if its a waste of time to get a hair transplant?

What you say is true.. it's a balance between looking better now and considering future appearance. The only thing I will day about shaving the head later on after a transplant is that the transplant may still show. Like, I look at my dad who is a NW6 (he is 69 but has been NW6 since 40)...nothing on top. When he trims it to short on tbe back and sides it looks quite neat. But I try to imagine what it would look like if he had gotten a hairline transplant ..or especially a transplant at the corners when he was younger, and the truth is that it would just look so obvious having dense transplanted corners with nothing around. The shadow would still show. He would literally have to bic it every morning in the hope that it wouldn't show against the other bald areas and you just know that other people would have spotted it. These are the realities unfortunately until we get a genuine 'cure' for hair loss. The best that people can do is to have a transplant when their hair loss has already finished and only if they have extremely good donor density/natural hair characteristics. That way a surgeon can perform something which looks natural. The trouble with transplants is that we see the best ones advertised and think the same is possible of us. I personally have terrible donor quality so can never be safe having a transplant.

Well even if shaving doesn't suit, it looks better than growing your hair out at NW4... You could consider scalp mocropigmentation if you do shave, but you should at least cut your hair short, buzz it if not shave entirely. Just get on finasteride and minoxidil for a year, regrow what you can then re-evaluate, consider a hair transplant and/or SMP then is my advice.

In all honestly OP there comes a certain breaking point where you need to avoid styles like this. Results in diminishing returns.

Buzz or keep it high & tight.

A style like yours just brings unwanted attention
