I really feel your pain. I still have loads of hair, a NW2 which I think is cosmetically acceptable, but ever since taking Propecia I have the most unbelievable scalp pain/itching/burning all along my hairline. 24/7 constant painful reminder that DHT is raping my follicles, and there is NOTHING I can do about it, no treatment has worked, I took a pill supposed to help male pattern baldness and it permanently made it 10 times worse. The feeling of having loads of hair, still looking good, and knowing you're losing it so rapidly, every second of every day I feel this burning itch is a constant torture I can't even adequately describe.

Way I see it there are varying degrees of male pattern baldness. I used to have the "best" kind, you know the non-aggressive, "I've been slowly receding 1mm a year for 10 years, should probably get on treatment" casual kind, where you maybe think about male pattern baldness once a week. Then there's what I have now, since taking Propecia, the 24/7 scalp itch, burning, seeing your hairline recede monthly, spending so much money, time and energy throwing every kind of topical and medicated shampoo and treatment at it, thinking about it every second of every day. I fantasize about how my life, how my hair would've been if I hadn't taken it, how non-aggressive and insignificant my male pattern baldness was. Self-inflicted, super-aggressive male pattern baldness... living with this mistake for the rest of my life.

The worst part is I really believe a solid treatment is only 4-5 years away (I know thats a hairloss community cliche but technology/medicine is moving fast). I could've left my hair, lived a happy life through my 20s - parties, festivals, girls, all the things I used to love, and my hair still would've been NW2 by the time I was 30.

I'm kind of sick of debating this, and this completely off the original topic of the thread, but I can only speak about my personal experience which is undoubtedly caused by Propecia. Look up reflex-hyperandrogenicity. It's simply increased sensitivity to DHT caused by Finasteride.

Balding is caused by your androgen receptor's (in the dermal papilla of the hair follicle) sensitivity to DHT.
Finasteride has the potential to upregulate, to massively increase the sensitivity, of your androgen receptors.

So you take Finasteride and it upregulates your ARs, regardless of whether you're blocking 60-70% DHT, you're now way more sensitive to the remaining DHT. This is obviously a rare reaction, and mine seems to be about as extreme as it gets. I don't understand why this upregulation doesn't seem to affect the vast majority of users, but lets just say every person's body will react differently. Just like some users experience watery semen, ED and yet others don't.

The increased sebum, increased libido, accelerated hairloss, itching/scalp pain (caused by DHT and the subsequent inflammation we call the "male pattern baldness itch") are all signs of sensitivity to androgens. This was NOT going to happen naturally, it's a reaction to a hormone-altering drug.

It's kinda stupid but....really fat people with full heads of hair. I work my *** off to stay in shape, not eating pizzas and chocolate and all the things I love, and it doesn't mean ****, all that effort means nothing because I'm losing my hair. And then yesterday I see this massive fat slob, NW0, and I think to myself "you ungrateful bastard, wasting your hair!!!". He's never going to get laid, he's a social outcast because he chooses to eat loads and not exercise, and all that precious hair on his head doesn't mean shiet, when it would make a life-changing world of difference to me.

DHT isnt the only thing that causes hair loss or else finasteride would be 100% successful. finasteride users have less DHT than castrates apparently

finasteride doesn't block all DHT and I don't think it's less than castrates as castrates have extremely low testosterone (from what I know, some test is made in the adrenal glands).
It's an unknown mechanism but it's clearly that DHT causes hair loss so lowering it, most the times, slows down hair loss.

I would give it a while before coming to any harder ideas on it as you went from long hair to zero so its a bit of a shock. I plan to shave and see how I look with it. Your dark so imo I reckon dark guys carry off short hair more than blonde, red. Shaved heads can look quite striking depending on the demeanour of the person which is why I would say there some psychological work needed by the wearer to come to terms with it and accept it and hopefully rock with it.

Perception can be weird also as I look back at photos and see what may have been hair loss but I noticed about 6 years after these photos. I can't remember exactly what my hairline was like so I don't know when things kicked in.
