Im male, 21, and have been on propecia and have been using nizoral for about 1.5 years now. Im not too happy with the results. I have gotten no regrowth, lost some hair on the temples, and possibly lost a shitload on the top of my head.

I have very very thin blond hair, was born bald, and it has always been baby fine. My grandfather went bald at 27, my grandmother wore a hair piece, my mother started thinning at 50, and my father only went to a Norwood 2 when he was my age before it stopped. I also have a cowlick I was born with, so *some* of the scalp shown around the swirl should be normal. So maybe, some of this is just due to bad lighting, and my thin hair (my scalp has always been see-through with my hair), but i doubt it.
:(

Heres the pics:

Hair is fine, no loss, dark, hasnt really changed since high school.

Pics from 3 weeks ago (long hair):

I grew my hair out the longest it has ever been in my life. Doesn't look too bad.

Short hair cut so the top stays long. Pics taken a few hours ago:

/cry. The dry pics see, perfectly fine. There really doesnt seem to be any change. The wet pics are a f*****g distaster. Im wondering if its a lighting issue due to my light hair, but that definatly seems like a ton of scalp showing.

What a bummer. I tried Rogaine for 4 months a year ago, but it didnt do a damn thing. Nizoral and Propecia dont seem to be doing anything either. I am not going to go the Proscar route since that is way too high of a dosage to be f*****g around with just for hair loss. I dont want my prostate being the size of a ping pong ball.

1.5 years, a thousand or more dollars short on the pills, and nothing :(

Dont take this too harshly. Its just a statement. ............some men have a very strong genetic tendency to baldness and probably not only inherited all of the hairloss genes, but have them all expressing themselves rather forcefully though repeat mutations on the genes.

Fight it as long as you feel like, but If I were you, looking at those photos, NEVER get surgery. Keep your ability to buzz it all if you dont have luck with meds and treatments.

Im not getting surgery till HM has been out and tested for at least 5 years. I may have an ugly non-bald look face, but id rather have that than the face + a scarred scalp which makes me a b**ch to hair companies.

Upping the dosage wouldn't make much difference, since 5mg of finasteride isn't that much more effective than 1mg. I've never heard of any negative effects on prostate health attributable to 5ARIs. Men with 5ARI deficiency live pretty healthy lives despite having even less DHT than a finasteride user - they never get prostate cancer or BPH. I think you should consider Avodart / Dutas, and maybe throw some copper peptides or Revivogen into the mix.

With just propecia and nizoral I dont think anyone should expect much regrowth. They should expect to maintain what they have going that route however. It looks as though the OP has maintained pretty well.

I suggest you try taking some growth stimulants like Rogaine Foam 2x a day and maybe purchase Nano shampoo for an extra bit of help. To me you look like someone who could respond well to minoxidil.

Cut it shorter would look much better, as i've lost ground i've had to go shorter and shorter..long and straggly does not look good.

With the amount of hereditary hairloss in your family you may want to go stronger to dutasteride..

Not too keen on minoxidil myself as its a lifelong regieme with a lot more hassle than taking a pill but many get good regrowth so consider that..

Good luck

I honestly think your long hair looks fine. I can barely even tell you're losing it.

your hair and actual face reminds me a lot of myself, what is your nationality?

also, i can promise you that you would have progressed a lot worse than that if you had not been on finasteride, stopping or slowing down is still amazing success compared to nothing

Mate your hair is naturally thin, so there is hardly any ground for finasteride to work on. finasteride cant alter ur hair genetics to make it thicker than it naturally is, but it will stop ur hair from going thinner due to dht.

Well, if I was pretending to be a doctor, I would say go for the Proscar : ) If the side-effects bother you, you can always stop taking it. Anyway, that's what I would do. Dutasteride on the other hand takes many weeks/months to stop causing side-effects.

P.S. You still have plenty of seed hairs. Might help it grow back w/ a higher dose?

I think finasteride helped you maintain your hair but you just didnt realize it.

About half German half Czech with a little bit of apache indian randomly thrown into the mix (great great grandmother = WTF?)

I just wish the top wasn't thinning. The temples really have not moved at all. Then again, maybe the top has more or less stayed the same, and its the pics which are at fault. In a natural light, everything looks fine. With a bright light beaming down on the top of my head, it reflects off of my blond hair and makes it look like skin.

The bright thinning top pic from a year ago looks a hell of a lot like the bright thinning top pics I took a few days ago.

Anyone know where I can host video? These pics utterly suck, and taking a video makes everything look significantly better due to lack of blurryness, multiple lighting angles, and sharper picture.

No, im not taking any other dht blocker route besides propecia, nizoral, and the natural stuff. Ive talked with my doctor extensivly about the Proscar route, and he is firmly against it. Ive known him since I was 3 years old, and I am best friends with his son. We are basically family, and he has jumped through quite a bit of hoops for me with other needed meds that are hard to get normally. If he knew there was something out there that would help me without bad sides, he would prescribe it no prob.

He told me that Proscar 5mg is too high of a dose, and I would be risking other stuff going awkward since I am fairly young. He has prescribed Proscar to much older patients before for prostate issues who ended up with dangerously small prostates and pretty severe gyno. Maybe they were just flukes, but no thanks.

Not to piss of the parades of any of you who take Proscar 5mg, but I personally do not trust any higher dosage which has not had a fairly extensive study done on it for treating a paticular illness. Its bad enough im losing my hair. It would be even worse if something else would arise due to treating hairloss.

Gyno is very rare, and as for "dangerously small prostates" - WTF? :? Never heard of that one!

This is the side effect profile for Proscar. It's a relatively safe drug.

Man, 1mg of finasteride was a totally arbitrary choice. There's not much point taking 5mg in preference to 1mg, as the effectiveness in reducing DHT and regrowing hair is not substantially greater given the extra cost.

I've had some reservations too, except that the FDA really really stays on the side of caution. If they are willing to prescribe it to anything short of a cancer patient, it's probably ok for at least 95% of the population. Gyno by the way was less than 1% in every study I have seen.
