1% nizoral and then nano shampoo?

Hi All,

I was wondering if it is OK to apply 1% nizoral, rinse
it off and then apply nano?

Can I optimize by combining the 1% nizoral and nano
shampoo (in my palm) and then apply this combination
to the hair?

I just started using Nano shampoo of Dr. Proctor.
It does not produce much lather at all.

I know that Dr. Proctor has answered in these forums how Nano is optimized for drug delivery and not for
foaming. He has also suggested to use another shampoo
prior to applying nano, but I am not sure if 1% nizoral
is OK as the first shampoo.

I've read on here that using a non-medicated shampoo (cheaper?) as a pre wash prior to nizoral is a good idea - so on that basis nizoral 1% could be a good pre wash for Nano???

Anoyone else care to chip in with some advice?

Answering my own question:

I mailed Dr. Proctor about my doubt and he was kind enough
to reply.

He says that yes its OK to use 1% nizoral before NANO
and he confirmed the fact that the active ingredients
in NANO suppress lathering.

The reason why medicated shampoos often don't lather much and are usually relatively liquid:

First, active ingredients are organic compounds. So, just like (say) the oils on your scalp, they "consume" lather. So medicated shampoos tend not to lather too much. This includes NANO shampoo.

With modern surfactants, lathering is not directly related to cleaning power. BTW, the solution that works is to add a high lathering surfactant like SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate). But then people complain about that because of an invented urban legend that SDS is "toxic".

I got tired of explaining over and over that SDS is not toxic as normally used and eventually just took it out. I finally tracked down the urban legend to a Pureology marketing campaign.

Interestingly, Pureology is owned by L'Oreal, who uses SDS in many of their other shampoos. The whole thing was pure hype. BTW, Pureology NANOworks products are not related to ours, but seem to be an attempt to capitalize on the reputation of our technology. Five L'Oreal patents cite me as "prior art".

Also, medicated shampoos are generally designed to be "thin". That is, not very viscous and lacking "body". This is so they penetrate well down to your scalp to deliver the active ingredients. BTW, all else being equal, the main thing that sets how much "body" a shampoo has is how much salt you add. So "body" is mostly for marketing purposes.

Always remember, the purpose of the shampoo part is to deliver the active ingredients to your scalp, not to clean your hair. Not that medicated shampoos are so bad at cleaning hair, generally. But everything is a compromise and people vary. If you find a medicated shampoo is not cleaning your scalp properly, just use a regular shampoo before using the medicated one.

I'm pretty sure that the shampoo I got from drproctor.com also said "Thinning Hair Treatment" on the bottle. Not sure if the word "nano" appears anywhere, but I'll check when I get home. Hopefully the "lite" version isn't also being sold on drproctor.com.
