I'm 17 and I badly receding to the point where it's getting worse and worse every week by quite an noticeable amount. I've ordered some minoxidil, but not too hopeful with it. My uncle on my dads side is the only male with mbp and he lost the majority of his in his 40's. My grandad on mums side lost his around his late 50's but that's it. Should I try finasteride? I have some in my drawer because I tried some about a month ago for a few days, not too sure if I experienced side effects.

Below ie I posed some pics of the back of my head when I have just woken up, I have quite oily hair I should note, weird thing is when I shower and it dries it's much better. I also posted a picture of one side of my hairline.

You should definitely see a good doctor. I'm not from US, but I do know for example that Dr. Robert M. Bernstein is a very reputable doctor in the area you live (he has a hair restoration clinic in New York). Speak with your parents, don't be shy, and even if they say something like "your hair is just fine", don't give up, insist to see a very good doctor.

I have already been to the dermatologist but he wasn't much help, obviously he was against finasteride at my age.

Go to your Doctor and complain. Refuse to leave until they take you seriously. That doesn't look normal, all the best mate.

Ben, I believe you've commented on one of my thread previously about my hair loss as 17 year old and finasteride. Since then I have been on finasteride about a month and as a of today have experience no side effects. I'm continuing the use of minoxidil and Nizoral and I believe the combination of the 3 will return me to a full nw1 if not only slightly worse! I would recommend you to try it out and not worry about the side effects. When I started it I had ED for about 2 days but it was all in my head as once I got my first erection I stopped worrying and have had no problems since. It's likely if you don't get on now you'll regret it later. Best of luck!!

I can help you stop your hair loss now.

1.- You say your hair is oily. That is clue #1. You must wash your hair with shampoo morning and evening every single day until at least you are 25. Never ever go to bed with an "oily" scalp. I put oily in quotations, as that terms is too benevolent sounding. That is darn sebum that causes inflammation and makes you lose your hair. So that is item #1. No excuses, no "I'll wash my hair tomorrow", etc. I am now almost 67 and most folks know me here from posting for decades in different sites. I still have about 90% of my hair. You can pooh-pooh my advice and save your hair...or not.

2.- This is new for me but it helps with skin issues: 400-600mg daily magnesium glycinate. It's cheap get it at the health food store.

3.- Do this urgently at least for a few months until it all stabilizes: dab a little of 1% or so hydrocortisone cream, available over the counter. Even 0.5% is fine. Do that every day.

4.- After shower you can dab a little aveeno daily moisturizer on your scalp it helps with inflammation.

so there you have it. Mind you, I have helped many, so this works. But hey...it's a lot easier to just dismiss this advice, so I understand if people will not follow through. It's been a while since I posted anything, but I'm doing it because I feel a need to help someone your age. Been there, done that.

Dont do this. Do you know how dangerous steroid creams are? I suffer from eczema and was medically advised to use steroid creams and they ****ed up my skin.

Steroids are are not designed or to be used as a cream or moisturiser. They are dangerous and addictive.

for **** sakes

go to a doctor, get a blood test - see how that goes??? my hair became quite thin a few months ago - it turned out my iron was low, and I got supplements and 4-5 months I see quite an improvement (not really there yet tho - but it hasn't gotten worse! )

That pattern of hairloss is odd. You should get it checked out as it might not be male pattern baldness.

Steroids like hydrocortisone are usually not advised to be used on the skin for more than 2 weeks, and you are saying to put it on for a few MONTHS?? This is dangerous stuff, and you are only gonna make your skin super thin from this.

Edit: Did not read the posts, someone also said the same thing lol
