hi everyone, when I stopped combing my hair (started a freeform dreadlocks journey about 4 months ago), i noticed some imperfections on my hairline, although i was getting edge ups weekly to keep it clean

I don’t know if i’m being obsessive over it, but i recently noticed it had gotten slightly thinner all the way from the middle of my hairline to the sides. The middle is much thicker, that’s for sure.

My dad has a full set of hair and a perfect hairline at his 60’s, my maternal granpda however had male pattern baldness, and thats scary

It looks fine when I don’t pull back my hair on purpose, but is it normal to have hair that thin in the sides or is it the beginning of male pattern baldness?

afaik the sides and back shouldn't be affected by male pattern baldness since they lack androgen receptors. It could be another condition or just how your hair is.

Well Maternal father's do tend to predispose their secondary male generation to male pattern baldness by at least 60-80% more often, according to research. Its much more likely to remain unaffected with male pattern baldness if your maternal father had a full head of hair than if your father or ur maternal father had some hair loss...

By sides i meant sides of the front (the corners and hairs close to it on the frontal hairline

Anyway I’m sure Im just having an obsession here, but ill try to keep an eye on it

Ohhhh yes. Now that you mention the sides... I see something weird going on with them. Looks like very mild thinning you might be at the very beginning of developing male pattern baldness process. Or ur just maturing, though any form of thinning and hair loss is male pattern baldness related. I would fear for the first statement though, considering you have maternal baldness in your genetics.

Ps. Your corners might have a bit of minituarization if this is truly happening. Check for stray hairs that are small and thinner to the 'thicker' and longer ones around it on the corners of your temple...

Look at Ben Kingsley and his children, they have perfect hair but that's cause their maternal genetics saved them. Same for clint eastwood.

My grandpa didnt die bald tho, he just had a receided hairline (M shape). Considering my dad has no male pattern baldness at all, Isn’t 18 years old still too young for me to start developping male pattern baldness?

There are people like me here who are developing male pattern baldness at ages 14... Dude, only my father is bald in my family line and no one else. Everyone else have the best hair genetics ever. But I still had a bit of recession at age 14
