Hi,
I turn 19 later this year and have been using minoxidil for 1 year now. I really need an antiandrogen though, as I want to maintain the amount of hair that I have right now. In general I have been an "early bloomer", with a little bit of chest hair right now and a full beard.

I was wondering on your opinions of whether I should use finasteride or RU58841? The way I see it:

finasteride:
Pros
- FDA approved
- Just a pill
- Studies show that it can maintain for a LONG time

Cons
- Side effects! Especially considering my young age?

RU:
Pros
- Considered "safe", with few(er) sides, especially since it's topical

Cons:
- Slightly more time consuming to apply
- No studies, neither on safety or long term maintenance

Any help is appreciated.

I'm 17 and I've been using finasteride for about 3 weeks and haven't had any sides yet. If that counts for anything.. I'd just go with finasteride bc it's easier and clinically tested to be effective. You never know with ru

Help!!!!!

I just turned 40 and didn't even know I was going bald u til I saw I picture my kid took from behind while I was sitting on the floor. I ran to the bathroom and grabbed a mirror and was horrified. No matter which way I combed my hair I couldn't hide my thinning bald spot on my crown. I've read about Finasteride and saw that many people are having success. I've also seen many are buying it online without a prescription. Is anyone buying theirs online and are you having good results. I want to keep the hair I still have. Buying online e appeals to me as Im a single dad and although I have health insurance for my 3 boys I can't afford to insure myself. I saw many men were ordering 5 MG Finasteride and chopping the pills into 3rd's or even 4th's thus saving money and still getting the 1.25mg per day dosage. Any help is appreciated I like having hair and don't want to just accept that I'm old just yet and just shave my head or stick my chest out and say hey world this is me I'm bald and proud of it

About 2% of people get sides from finasteride, I would take this if you want to keep your hair and if that isn't enough add RU as well.

How old are you and how long have you been taking finasteride? Any sides? Feels pretty comforting to know that I'm not the only young person dealing with this though.

I'm not sure what to make of that 2% figure. Feels way too low considering the amount of people reporting sides on forums like this, propeciahelp and the amount of people suing Merck, etc.

I would honestly use Finasteride if you feel comfortable enough to start it. Where would you get RU anyways dependably?

I would go with finasteride. I laugh at how people are afraid of finasteride sides, yet are willing to rub a non-FDA approved chemical into their head that they got from China.

Well it's hard to trust the studies on finasteride judging by forums and all of the people suing Merck (which I believe is going to trial in October this year). However, RU58841 is:
- A topical (sure, there is the ability for systemic absorption but I don't think it's "as scary" applying a topical as taking an oral pill) --> Mainly affects the area where it's applied, not the entire body
- Lots of anectodal evidence of no sides, or far fewer sides than finasteride
- There are solutions to buy from Kane, feels like a simple and easy way

EDIT: But thank you for your input. I am considering finasteride still and I do agree with your comment to some extent.

Actually, it makes perfect sense, if you trust the FDA about as much as you trust the Chinese black market for hair loss, which I do. 2% of people have sides on finasteride? that's laughable. What do you guys consider, "sides"?

I suppose S5 Cream is not a good alternative right? Thanks for the replies, reading them makes me feel like I want to start finasteride, but then as soon as I start feeling that way I look at post-finasteride-syndrome stuff and get scared as hell haha.

RU is much less extensively tested than finasteride, so if you're worried about finasteride side effects, it doesn't make much sense to take something about which even less is known...

Do not take any pills man. Do you want to experience sideeffects because of hair? I lost my hair completely at age 19 and just used a cap to cover my baldness. If you want hair then buy yourself a hairsystem. Its expensive but no sideeffects.

Sincerely

Totally depends on how aggressive hair loss is and what can you expect based on your family history. If you are a receder who is going to turn NW3.5 or 4.0 in your mid to late thirties, a combination of Min and spironolactone can be pretty effective. I have been on spironolactone for the last 6-7 months and I think it is doing a decent job. Good thing is that there are virtually no sides. My hairline is intact (the region where I apply spironolactone) but I am thinning on the left side. The cream is a little hard to spread especially when you have hair longer than 1.5 inches.

Thanks for your response. All males in my family pretty much have a NW5-7, and I have a cousin who is a NW5 by 30, so I definitely need something strong eventually. For now though, I have a pretty decent hairline, however my main concern is the loss of density. I really don't want to lose any more density and enjoy having slightly longer hair.

Currently, I'm thinking of topical finasteride for starters, and maybe switching it with oral finasteride eventually or something. Such an extreme decision agony!
