Sounds like he gave up finasteride to try the Immortal Hair regimen...

Damn, it's been a while since I posted. I actually went through a shed earlier this year, my hair improved, and now I believe I may be in another shed. We'll see what happens. As for non-hair related stuff, dropped about 16lbs and am feeling great.

Ok, last update was that dougie quit finasteride and started healthy supplemental and eating regimen to see how that affects hair/growth. So, what is the verdict?

Been a while. Hair was doing terrific, however, I've been dealing with a bit of a health issue. Ended up coming down with a magnesium deficiency 6 weeks ago and have had major food allergies and light palpitations/skin/insomnia issues. This also lead to quite a bit of shedding, that I've only just started to notice. I've upped my magnesium, both oral and topical so let's see what happens. This sucks because I was actually pretty happy with the way things were going. Also, something potentially related to finasteride but it could also be from the magnesium deficiency. My swimmer count (aka sperm) is low and the motility is bad. I got it tested twice and it has improved with the magnesium so let's see where it goes. I never knew how important magnesium was and how many processes it is involved in, but the first night I put on the topical I was out cold for like 9 hours. I've been spraying it on top of my head once I found out it had relevance to hair loss. At this point I've changed so many things so I wont be able to make any conclusions as to what's doing what.

Not sure what the Immortal Hair regimen is, I assume it's just a healthy lifestyle program. If that's the case that's definitely what I'm doing.

The finasteride def caused the low sperm count, also taking ZMA or magnesium and zinc helps your sperm and testosterone levels at night or your libido, a lot of guys take it before bed to counter the effects of finasteride.

There are other libido boosters.

When I took Proscar cut in 4ths I regrew my hair and thicker, but I had insomnia and depression also low libido and some mental issues like forgetfulness.

Popped back on here to take a look at my previous timeline experience with 1mg finasteride & 1% Nizoral, so figured I’d update.

Went off Tx about 14 yrs ago. Was trying to spit out a kid and read finasteride is no bueno when doing that. So shifted to a more lifestyle heavy approach. The lifestyle things I did, which you can read in previous posts, may have helped a bit. My overall health improved pretty dramatically, as I’m now down to 180lbs from a high of 230lbs.

I gradually lost my hair gains, but over a much longer timeframe than I would have thought. Say 4-5 yrs(~2016ish it was worse, changed how I parted my hair but you still couldn’t really tell) I did stay on Nizoral for several years because I had dandruff. Stopped that eventually, and that may be contributing to a more rapid progression the last couple years. My wife noticed from afar during Covid, which is probably when I stopped doing Nizoral. It’s been at least a couple years.

Looking back on pics, it actually held up fairly well til then. Just a note, my wife and I did end up having to do IVF for both kids. My sperm count and motility were pretty variable and testosterone was on the lower end of normal. But to be fair, I was 37yo when I started trying to have kids so that’s a factor too.

At this point my thinning hair is pretty noticeable. Now that I’m out of the kids game I figured I’d hop back on finasteride and nizoral.

Started Nizoral sometime around Jan/Feb 2025. Not because of the hair loss, but because my dandruff was pretty bad. That’s corrected at this point and started finasteride .25mg every other day on 5/3/2025.

Started this regimen to lessen potential side effects. Will do .25mg eod for 2 wks, then stick to .25mg every day for a bit. May jump to 1mg at some point, but not sure. Will probably get a script for nizoral 2% at my physical soon. Topical finasteride is out because I wouldn’t want my sons to be potentially exposed to it.

There was a definite drop in libido. That does seem to be abating, as I woke up with morning wood this am. Previously, that happened pretty much every day. I will say my libido previous to starting this time was probably a bit much for someone who’s almost 50, so a slight retraction is fine for now.

ED not an issue, can still perform. If that does become an issue I’ll definitely reconsider.

Goal right now is to just maintain or slightly improve what I can until I eventually get a transplant. Kids are expensive so that’s probably a couple years down the road. I’ll monitor for health issues such as blood pressure and such.

If I were to give an overall synopsis/recommendation to folk, I’d say the results were nothing short of amazing. However, there’s a good chance finasteride played a role in fertility issues and the fluctuations in libido. But again, age was a factor too.

So I’d definitely weigh those things before making the decision to go on finasteride. I was fortunate enough to have 2 sons via IVF, but you may not be. Looking back, losing my hair in my late 20s/early 30s would have sucked, but infinitesimally less than not having my kids.

Oh yeah, and don’t wait until you’re 40 to have your first kid.
