2 questions about minoxidil

I have diffuse thinning and started taking minoxidil about a month ago. Been alternating each day applying 1 ml per day then twice the next day. I had an emergency trip and did not apply any for 3.5 days. On the 2nd full day of not using it I experienced a very nasty shed. I have been losing my hair at a very consistent rate for years so this was a definite shed. At any rate I have started back on it and now the loss is back at its normal rate. To this point I have not noticed that the minoxidil is helping although I know its only a month in. I have 2 questions that if anyone could give me their opinions it would be greatly appreciated:

1) Is it normal to experience a shed after only 1 and a half days of not applying it? I thought a person could go a 3-4 days w/o any worries. I wonder if maybe it was because I am early in the treatment and therefore its more important to not miss consecutive days as much as it would be if I was 6 months into it.

2) Does the fact that I shed while off of it perhaps indicate it might help or be helping? Or could it be that I might not respond to it at all but going off it for a few days like I did would still result in a bad shed. If that doesnt make sense i guess my issue is that even if the minoxidil wouldnt help i did a very bad thing by going off it for a few days and in the end i did no good and only bad. Or could that shed while off be an indication that it was helping or going to help?

I have searched many posts on this but still wanted to ask. I guess my big worry is that I will not respond to the minoxidil and now have just put myself in a position where I would have more hair if I never tried it than i did going off of it for 3.5 days. Anyway thanks in advance for any replies.

Minoxidil will **not** make your hair worse off, long term, then if you never would have used it. Worse case situation, your hair doesnt respond to Minoxidil and your hair will look worse for about 3 - 4 months while the hair that was shed grows through the telogen phase and re-enters the anagen phase.

All you can do is take before and after pics for the next 6 - 12 months and compare. If your hair looks better then you're a responder. If it doesnt, then you might not be a responder in which case you could stop using Minoxidil (WARNING: You may still experience a shed when you stop Minoxidil, even if you dont think it has helped you, in which case your hair will look worse while the shed hair goes through the above mentioned telogen phase).

If you respond to minoxidil you may shed a small amount of hair (usually of no comsmetic significance) along with experiencing regrowth.

If you do not respond to minoxidil you will not shed hair nor will you gain hair.

It would be an unusual response to just shed hair without regrowth.

thanks for the replies guys. I guess my main concern is when I did shed but it was the 3 days while I was not taking it. If I had started shedding while I was on it then I would think ok this sucks but at least that might be an indication of future growth.

Anyway now I am back on it and that 3 day shed immediatley slowed back down to just my usual hair loss rate. Now its been about 5 days back on it and I am noticing that I seem to be losing some very short hairs, most between a half inch to an inch or so. I am still losing my normal hairs too but at least its not as bad as that 3 day period while I was off the minoxidil.

At any rate I guess at this point I will not be going off the minoxidil for a long time if only because I am scared I will have another massive shed as soon as I stop taking it.
