Hello,

I appreciate the responses ahead of time, thank you. I would like some opinions & thoughts on if I should hop on Propecia. really worried about side effects or just wait & cross fingers something better in next 1-3 years.

To put it simply I am completely confused. I have been to 3 Dermatologists & can not confirm a consensus.

Derm 1: Looked at my hairline/hair & said looks completely normal for you age. As we age your hairline will go back. If it bothers you can try Minoxidil but I do not see a reason to do that.

Derm 2: Looked at my hairline/hair & said yep you have male pattern baldness. I said OMG will I go bald. He said I can not predict that but it is highly unlikely. You can try Minoxidil if you want for your temples. Confused with how I can have male pattern baldness but can not go bald.

Derm 3: Looked at my hair/hairline & said I do not see anything aggressive here looks completely normal for your age. I do not recommend any treatment. He said I do not see any miniaturization but just check every 6 months & go from there.

I am concerned because there are differing opinions & I have OCD so I obsess over things. I mean my hairline temple region is going back which I am fine with I just do not want it to progress. I want to see a 4th Dermatologist & get there opinion but do not want to waste the money. I want to be pre-emptive until hopefully better treatments come out 2018+.

Family History;

Dad: 55 Yr. Old NW1 No balding
Mother: No balding
Grandfather(P): 76 Yr Old. NW3 No balding(No Crown or Vertex Loss)
Grandmother(P): No Balding
Grandfather(M): 72 Yr. Old Started at 18 Bald
Grandmother(M): No balding

My family history is solid except for Maternal Grandfather. I am hoping I do not follow him. He had NW3 with Crown recession at 23 which I am not following yet.

Pictures:

The black & white picture from 2 years ago you can see the skin on top of head band. I am hoping thinking maturing hairline but I may be being bias. Thoughts.

My crown vertex seem solid but my temples you can see recession. Thoughts? & again thank you to everyone!!!

yes you are balding, but at a very slow rate, if youre happy with what you have right now jump on finasteride, i would try minoxidil though for your temples, they have receded quite a bit.

from someone who was told similar things with little consensus from doctors and derms I can only recommend you book an appointment with a hair transplant surgeon who will prescribe you finasteride no prob, or a COSMETIC Dermatologist (how I finally got finasteride). It definitely looks like male pattern baldness to me but with good density. Keeping that hair would be a blessing, so try your best to do something.

Your crown looks fine (it's just the part) but your temples have recession. Not too bad though no average person would consider you balding. Don't read into Finasteride horror stories, just give it a shot and if you get undesirable sides just get off of it. It's better to at least try it then think "what if?" years down the line.

Thank you guys. That is disappointing. I was hoping mature hairline but looks past that point? I am waiting for other Derm who just deals with hairloss in CT area to call me back to set up appointment. Worried about Propecia though. Temple recession does not bother me unless it is a large amount but I just do not want the bald spot or vertex balding. My density & thickness is fine but temples have receded probably about a 1/4-1/2 inch. Thank you again.

Please anybody who wants to comment will be most welcome.

I feel for you

I'm going through the same thing at age 28 though mine has progressed even more than that. Decide what treatment options if any are right for you and then follow through.

you need to understand that a mature hairline IS male pattern baldness. In a lot of people they recede in a way that pushes the hairline back somewhat, yet retain enough density to appear non balding which is where the euphemism comes from. Its possible that this maturing is a lifelong process (basically very slow recession) as the hairs at the hairline slowly die (which is true in the majority of cases, Johnny Depp for example had a 'mature hairline' when he was younger but at his age now it is past that point). In your case you have a receding hairline but its not bad, get on finasteride and you will have hair for a long time. I am in a similar position to you. My family history has zero crown loss but minor recession is prevalent so I decided to get on finasteride.

Thank you for your reply. You explained more then the derms. Makes sense. Whether this is true or not I read most caucasian male hairlines goes back it is just a question wether it is extremely fast or if you have thinning.

Any other input from any one would be great thank you.
