Hi. I'm a 27 year old male, who has until now, always had a very full thick head of hair. This goes for everyone in my family and there's no notable history of male pattern balding etc.

However, in the past month or so, I have noticed a drastic change to my hairline on my temples, and an overall thinning of my hair. When I lift up my fringe, the hair to the right and left of it has completely pulled back. It's terrifying and very sudden, and I'm wondering should I look at treatment ASAP before it gets even worse, or is it a lost cause. Thank you

Difficult to tell with your hairline and temples since we have no “before” pictures to compare to. Your crown looks like it might be thinning a little bit? If you’ve kept the same fringe/hairstyle for a long time it’s possible your hairline just matured slowly over the years without you noticing it. Hairlines don’t recede in a month or two. Read up about hair cycles and miniaturization.

The worst part about miniaturization is that we cannot see it until it reaches nearly 50%. Only way to catch it early is via examination under magnification.

Regardless, your hair looks good to the casual observer who doesn’t lurk in hairloss forums. If you have no occurrences of baldness in your family tree then the odds are in your favor. Nothing is guaranteed of course. Monitor the situation every 6 months with photos using consistent lighting and camera angles and go out and live your life in the meantime.

Dude why do you waste your money on brand name propecia? Too paranoid about generics? Propecia is double the price of a generic stop this nonsense.

You're not too late at all — sudden hair thinning can be from stress, illness, or even a temporary condition like telogen effluvium, which often reverses. But since it could also be early male pattern baldness, it's smart to act early.

Best next steps:
  • See a dermatologist or hair clinic for a proper diagnosis.
  • Consider starting minoxidil or finasteride if male pattern baldness is confirmed.
  • Rule out other causes with basic blood tests (vitamin D, iron, thyroid, etc.).
You’ve caught this early — treatment now can make a big difference.
