4 Months On finasteride - Hair Is Hopefully At Its Worst, Rate My Norwood

Ive just hit 4 months on finasteride without much of a sign of improvement but I'm still taking it, hoping the next few months will be when it starts get better or at least itll stop getting worse.

So assuming this could be my hair at its worst I'd like to hear what Norwood people think I'm at. Please let me know what you think

His temple points have started to recede in my opinion he is around 2.5

Still have a great head of hair and great density. You are forming a mature hairline( NW2).

I would have thought that there is too much thinning for it to be considered a mature hairline, without finasteride I would certainly go bald. I'm a bit concerned coz of my age (20) that finasteride wont be enough especially since it started receding around 18. Would you recommend adding minoxidil or should finasteride be enough?

2.5. You could add minoxidil and microneedling to strengthen that hairline, and have a solid NW2.

A couple years ago I used minoxidil when I first noticed recession and panicked but I stopped once I ran out after 6 months, I didn't enjoy using it and I'm hoping that finasteride could regrow some hair on its own. you think this is wishful thinking or is there some chance that the slightly thin parts of the hairline could be restored on finasteride alone?

Anything when it comes to regrowth in the hairline is wishful thinking. There have been people who regrow just with finasteride, there have been others who regrow with both (more with both obv). If you didn’t like using minoxidil/found it annoying, don't bother starting again because if you want results with it you cannot just do it for 1-2 years and then stop it’ll have to be an 2x a day everyday thing forever. Finasteride (in theory) will keep everything you have right now for a long time which you should be happy about.

If you were to ask me your right side (in photos) will catch up to your left and that’s all you will progress. You're a NW2 right now, nothing more.

As everyone’s head has curvature to it, there are not many people who have a straight hairline, many people without hairloss when they pull their hair back have a curved hairline that represents their skull/head. Hey my question is regarding minoxidil if i stop minoxidil after some time will it effect my current healthy hairs aswell? Or it will only affect the hairs grown by the drug?

I'm not so sure about minoxidil being a forever thing. The data behind that is from minoxidil use alone, not with finasteride. I don't put a lot of stock in anecdotal experiences of those saying they couldn't maintain on finasteride. I have seen it go both ways on the forums, so I'm not willing to say there is any evidence one way or the other. Especially when combined with microneedling you are creating brand new healthy follicles. If DHT is under control I can see those hairs not needing minoxidil anymore once they are fully matured.

Very well could be true. Perhaps I’m biased when it comes to minoxidil. Never liked the idea of putting that thing on in the morning and then having a social life throughout the day and then putting it on at night. Rinse and repeat for months. Not for me, Id rather maintain with finasteride and then get a hair transplant down the road, got money to burn. Power to anyone who can deal with minoxidil though, envious.

I’m not the person to ask to be honest, no experience with it. From my understanding if you’re not on finasteride there is very little minoxidil can do for you long term (5+ years). I would assume stopping minoxidil will affect the hairs regrown by it, but this is an assumption - it very well may not. I know for beard purposes, anything gained with minoxidil is kept but beard is a different story, beard hair thrive off DHT etc.

It's definitely a hassle. Oral minoxidil is much easier, but that has its drawbacks too.

I have been considering oral minoxidil after not gaining anything from finasteride. I saw one user here started growing hair in awkward parts of his face though so this prevented me from starting, also I am a hairy guy in general therefore I dont want to start growing hair on my back and shoulders lmao. Would you mind sharing some drawbacks to oral minoxidil?

You just hit on the one that kept me away from it for years, though I'm about to start it because the results are superior to topical. The other problems are tachycardia, blood pressure, and water retention. I'm going to take a diuretic to combat the sides.

Yea f*** that. High blood pressure runs in the family, not for me.

If you look at most success stories or on websites posted by hair loss doctors, you will see the best results were when the patient used finasteride with minoxidil. They work better together than individually. One is a growth stimulant while the other blocks DHT. It is really up to you if you want to add another treatment. I have been on and off minoxidil many times without stopping finasteride. I find my hair does better with both.

Maintenance is progress, but you really can’t judge anything yet its too soon. Lets see how you’re doing around month 9.
