5ar1 inhibition rate from dutasteride at a 75% dose (3 capsules in each 4 day period)?

Some interesting posts you guys have made. So what dose of dutasteride would you say is a good dose to take in terms of getting results better than those that would be achieved by finasteride, but also a dose that limits 5ar1 inhibition as much as possible? It may be that more research is needed to answer this question, but it would appear to me that 0.5mg daily, which inhibits approximately 50% of 5ar1, is not the best choice of dose for those who are trying to find the most sensible compromise between getting good results while also trying to limit 5ar1 inhibition as much as possible. A slightly lower dutasteride dosage of perhaps 0.33mg may be a better choice for people such as myself who have these concerns over 5ar1 inhibition. Any thoughts anyone? Thanks.

Well the thing is, the superior results of dutasteride come from 5-AR I inhibition. So it would be an oxymoron to want both at the same time.

I always say that the best mode of treatment is catching male pattern baldness with finasteride as early as possible, to avoid this cognitive dissonance.

In my opinion, the superior results of dutasteride over finasteride are due to both its greater inhibition of 5-AR II plus it's additional 5-AR I inhibition. Dutasteride at a daily dose of 0.5mg inhibits about 99% of 5-AR II, whereas finasteride inhibits only 85-90%. I think this extra 10-15% definitely makes a difference.

I just want to clear up some confusion. Hairloss is caused by 5 Alpha reductase type II dht not type I. This has been demonstrated by studies and the fact that drugs on the market for inhibition of type I are not useful for hairloss. The reason why Dutasteride is more effective is not because it inhibits type I dht but because it inhibits more type II dht. Finasteride actually inhibits roughly 68-70% of dht while a .5mg of dutasteride inhibits 92% of serum dht and 96% of serum dht with a 2.5mg dose.
Here is a paragraph confirming this:
[h=3]Dutasteride 2.5mg vs. 0.5mg[/h]The 2.5-mg dutasteride dose was consistently superior to 0.5-mg dutasteride in promoting scalp hair growth. The 2.5-mg dose was also better than the 0.5-mg dose at suppressing scalp DHT (79% vs. 51%), whereas it was only marginally better at suppressing serum DHT (96% vs. 92%). This difference in the dose-response of serum and scalp DHT to inhibition with dutasteride is likely to be due to the greater contribution of type 1 5α-reductase to scalp DHT concentrations.[h=3]Finasteride 5mg vs. Dutasteride 0.1mg[/h]5 mg finasteride suppressed scalp DHT to a similar degree as 0.1 mg dutasteride group (41% and 32%, respectively). Many of the clinical effects (hair count changes, global panel assessment, and investigator assessment) were also similar in these two groups, supporting the similarity in scalp suppression between 5-mg finasteride and 0.1-mg dutasteride.

Although Dutasteride is more effective for male pattern baldness, it is more suitable for BPH since it inhibits both enzymes. This is why GlaxoSmithKline put off clinical trials for Dutasteride as a hairloss treatment.

I appreciate all your responses guys, even though the actual query I put forward hasn't really been answered properly. I have, however, decided upon what I think will work in my case. I am currently taking finasteride 1.25mg daily. I've had moderate results from the finasteride with no side effects. I have decided to make the switch to dutasteride 0.5mg every other day. If I do not experience side effects on that dutasteride dosage after six months, I will increase it slightly to two capsules in each three day period (equating to 0.33mg daily). I think I'll then settle with that for the time being and see how things go. I am going to take a low dose of finasteride (probably 0.5mg daily) alongside the dutasteride just as a backup in case the dutasteride happens to be fake. I'll keep you posted on how this regimen works out. :)
