A Turn for the Worst - 11 month update

11 months on finasteride.

8 months on minoxidil to the right temple and hairline.

Lasercomb for 5 months

Results:

Much worse than baseline.

Right temple hair is turned into fuzzy, shitty flat thin hair.

Left temple pretty much perfect.

Crown - no visible loss.

Discussion:

Pissed off - right temple is looking very bad and has never got any better.

Worried about my minoxidil applications to it as there has been no 'rollercoaster' of shed/regrowth, just a progression of thinning and diffusion of the right temporal area.

Considering quitting minoxidil but I am worried about losing the temple completely, I can categorically say that I have not gained anymore hair through minoxidil.

I use Dr Lee's by the way.

I am also concerned that I have read a lot of posts lately from people claiming that minoxidil seemed to make their temples recede.

Without photos, no one can accept any of your conclusions.

I don't give a sh*t whether you accept it or not - I can categorically say my right temporal area is currently much worse than when I started treatments.

I'm not some newbie that has been treating this male pattern baldness without any research or knowledge. I do realise that things may get better over the next few months, I am just telling it how it is.

I would also like to think that some people that i have regularly spoken to on this site over the last 6 months would accept my conclusions.

I accept your conclusions, dude. However, I'd also give min at least ten months before chucking it. Has finasteride helped you maintain at all, or slow the degree of loss?

From what I can see I have lost about some hairline on the right hand side but its not straight or smooth recession, more of an eroded and uneven loss.

Then I would on the right temple that there is less hair in the NW3 area and its also thinner. The hair is kind of 'kinked' in this area. If I comb it forward in a caesar style - the right temple area is noticeably thinner so the fronge or 'bangs' are almost missing on the right hand side.

The left side is pretty much perfect apart from very slight mature hairline. The rest of my hair is incredibly thick.

I guess the contrast between my very thick hair and thinner patch is quite striking, maybe if I had thinner hair in general it would not notice so much.

The jury is out on the lasercomb but I really cant see it being a miracle cure.

I really believe minoxidil sux for the temples. I guess I am in the same situation as you but its my left temple that is all thin and receded, while my right temple is practically perfect.

minoxidil has grown some hair for me in my left temple but its sh*t hair (3/4 inch long, thin, and flat) Also I think in the process of growing some of this sh*t hair its caused alot of healthy hairs to "shed" in my left temple area, making that area much thinner, diffused, and receded.

Yet Im still afraid to get off of it because, like you said, I think I will lose the temple completely. I use Rogaine 5% btw for about 9-10 months now. This sux ***

I would stick to the minoxidil. I was on minoxidil for around 6month last year then stopped. I lost a lot of hair and shed like a b**ch. So ive started it again (1x daily) and im sticking to it for life. Dont get off minoxidil.....

do yourself a favour and sell the laser comb its worthless. I sold mine like 5 months ago. I've gotton a bit of improvement since then on continued treatments

Or alternatively... dont get on it!

Neiltom88... i think it raped my temples also... plus diffused some of my hair front top... I stopped using minoxidil after 6-8 weeks on it, within a week my scalp felt normal again and i spent less time stressing over those shitty little hairs i tricked myself into thinking minoxidil had grown. And i know people will say "Two months isn't enough" but f*** that... it was enough for me to decide i hate minoxidil... hate it.

You guys are having bad response because I firmly believe minoxidil has completely ressurected my temples from the dead.

I rub it into my hairline.

I have had definite shedding and definite regrowth on my temples.

Last month my right temple was noticeably thinner... it has all sprouted back with even more growth.

minoxidil doesn't "cause" temple recession. It just isn't working for you  , that's all.

I think minoxidil has been far more aggressive in my regrowth than finasteride. Why do I think that?

Becuase I was on minoxidil for almost 4 months before starting finasteride and for four months minoxidil started kicking *** for me.

I was making SOLID gains before I started finasteride.

I will keep going on the minoxidil until the 12 month mark and evaluate then.

Not very hopeful to be honest though.

So how long have you been on Minoxidil, when did you see 'success', and what do you consider 'success'? Have you grown terminal hairs from minoxidil in your temples or is it just some fuzzy pubic lookin stuff?

If minoxidil works its gonna work in the first 3 months or so or not at all, That's what all the data suggests.

I despise the stuff.

I really was a twat for starting it. I was not very well read on male pattern baldness and its treatments when I started it and did not fully realise the consequences - now I do.

I dread applying it to my hair evryday, makes me feel sick that I have to keep using it but it might be making my male pattern baldness worse. Wankshaft!

It's not making your male pattern baldness worse by using it, only damaged hairs will be shed. It may make your hair worse if (when) you quit though. But hopefully you'll get back to "how you would have been without it" within time. Stick with the finasteride though.
