abnormal itching

hey guys,
i started using generic minoxidil 5% 2x daily about 8-9 months ago w/nizoral 1%(every 3), and then added propecia about four months in with good results. I had the usual itch that was pretty much went away with the nizoral.

My problem started like 2 months ago, when I couldn't find the generic minoxidil, so I had to buy rogaine 5% for a month. Two weeks after i started Rogaine, my head started itching like crazy again, and I figured I could ride it out like last time, but now almost two months later, it's still on fire. This time though, it feels very irritated and the area that itches has spread. When I shower or comb, I can feel it very much. I also need to mention that I added T-Gel on nizoral off days to try and help with the itching/flaking, but to no avail.

Anyone else had this problem? I basically want to get rid of the irritation but I am not sure which product is causing it. Should i drop the minoxidil?nizoral?tgel? maybe get something else....?

any advice is welcome.

Try nizoral 2% from here. http://www.netpharmacy.co.nz/index.php? ... tree_id=70 No presciption needed... and get folligen spray from folligen.com.

what does folligen do? and i was thinking that perhaps it is the nizoral or the t-gel that is irritating my scalp. Like I said, the itching subsided when I first started up the treatment, but went out of control when I had to switch to Rogaine for the one month. Now, whatever irritation the Rogaine caused never healed. I'm trying to see which one of these products may be making it worse since my dome is def. not in good condition. I was thinking about dropping one or even the minoxidil until my scalp heals up.

Interesting, but very common, situation.

Many here have suffered irritation from one or more components of their hair regimen. One possibility is that you are allergic to the Propelyne Glycol (PPG) that is inherent in Minoxidil. PPG is a chemical that creates irritation on the scalps of many who use Minoxidil. You say you were using a generic, and that the irritation coincided with your starting Rogaine. This is a bit of a stretch here, but it could be that the Rogaine has more PPG in it than did your generic. Often times PPG reactions go away over time. Other times, Nizoral or T-Gel will effetively moderate the symptoms. And for some, they just need to switch to a product that has less, or no, PPG in it. If this is the case, then switching back to your generic should solve the problem?

If it is the Nizoral that is creating scalp irritation, you would not be the first. Some of the posters here will remember Cassin from Dallas... he had a terrible reaction with Nizoral, his scalp went crazy. The day he dropped it things improved very quickly. You might be in the same boat.

If I were you, I would drop the Nizoral first, and see what that does. If after a few Nizoral-free weeks things do not show improvement then check back here and we will go from there with a plan b. If the Nizoral is not the culprit, then it very well might have been the Rogaine... and we can help you with that if going back to your generic doesn't do the trick. Take care.

Man my scalp has been acting up lately. I swear this is the worst it has ever itched and it itches when I shower out the minoxidil in the morning. I have been on a little break from the minoxidil, about 4 days now, and my scalp is much less bothersome. I have been, and continue to be using Nizoral every three days, but the itch was cutting right through. I have not had such an agressive itch and irritation since begining my regimen 10 months ago. I am going to lay low on the minoxidil for a week or so more, then get back on the stuff and see what happens. It was just to much to handle a week ago. It feels great to give the noggin a break.

A disclaimer: this is a very un-scientific posting!

This could be completely mental and not real, but for me, my spironolactone seems to make my itching go away. After about 5-10 mins of it setting in, my hair feels fantastic at the root. Anyone else who uses spironolactone notice this?

Yep he's dead on. I had mild irritation with minoxidil alone and it wasn't that bad at all. Not even enough to want to itch it. Then I started Nizoral and my scalp condition went downhill fast. There was a period of 2 weeks where my scalp was in such bad shape, I was pretty much in pain. It hurt pretty bad to even comb my hair. You could just look at my scalp and tell it was in bad shape. Nizoral seemed to completely dry out my scalp. Even T/GEL and T/SEL do somewhat the same thing, but not near as bad.

I would drop Nizoral completely and see if that is the problem. Also try going to one minoxidil app a day till things improve, even skip a whole day if things are bad.

I had to do this and it got things back into shape fast. Everyone has diff skin types, even though most people's irritation imrove by using Nizoral, there seems to be a very small percentage of people who's scalp gets worse by using it.

I hope this works.

UPDATE:

So the itching was driving me nuts for a while. I decided to drop the Nizoral and I switched to just regular shampoo, and also added a good conditioner. Now my scalp feels great. No more burning in the shower. Still a little itchy, but getting better by the day. I'm gunna keep on this path for a while. The good thing is I can still apply minoxidil 2X daily.
