Advice for a 20 year old with noticeable recession

Hi, I just turned 20 in December and I've noticed significant recession since I was 17.

Back in November I saw a dermatologist about this. Without even looking at it he told me to use Rogaine, but said it probably wouldn't regrow the hair, only stop further recession. He also specifically said not to use propecia because of side effects, and didn't even address the possibility of finasteride. I was surprised and disappointed by this outcome, but I went with it.

It's been almost 3 months, and I've been applying Rogaine (5% foam) as diligently as possible to the bald spot, hoping maybe he was wrong. I'm not noticing anything significant - upon close inspection, I can see some "peach fuzz" that gets longer the closer it gets to my hairline, but that's about it.

Was he right? Is all hope lost for my hair? I feel embarrassed to leave the house.

Some pictures from today (excuse the messiness):

Oh, I had no idea finasteride and propecia were the same thing. I'll definitely see if I can get more info on it. I'm just a little wary, having had a specialist specifically tell me not to use it.

Also, this may be a common question, but how long should I use Rogaine before I can safely conclude that it isn't working? I've seen some sources say you'll start seeing results in 6 months, while others say as much as 12-18 months.
