Hello all, I have just recently decided to do something to curb the progression of my male pattern baldness. This may seem unsual to some, but I am only 17 and yet seeing significant recession of the hairline. I am 100% sure this is male pattern baldness as my father started balding at a young age and my brother, who is 21, is close to a NW3. I have done a considerable number of hours researching my options on the internet and have come to a few conclusions. The first is that I am not willing to take Propecia or anything with finasteride in it. My hair is important to me, but I don't want to risk growing breats, haveing testicular pain, or other sexual side effects. Also, academics is extremely important to me, and the possibility of the so-called "brain fog" which can accompany propecia doesn't appeal to me.
My main goal for any treatment I take is simply to maintain and delay male pattern baldness for a few years. That's it. I'm not very/if at all concerned about regrowth as I can still conceal my male pattern baldness at this stage.
The potential products I am considering right now are as follows: Proxiphen-N used with NANO shampoo (I saw some pictures of people who have maintained with just this regimine), Rogaine Foam (the liquid kind looks messy and is more likely to cause dandruff), or topical spironolactone. I also plan to start drinking green tea.
A final note is that I am also currently trying to gain some muscle mass by working out reguarly, having a personal trainer, and I'm considering taking whey protein on the advice of my trainer; however, I'm not sure if this may complicate efforts I take to maintain my hair. The reason I'm trying to put on extra muscle is because I figure I will shave my head if all else fails. Thanks for reading and offering your input

All pretty good stuff. Your first step would be to stabilize hair loss by combating DHT, since you are against finasteride, your only alternatives would be topical spironolactone and revivogen, both are not systematically absorbed and should help. The other stuff you mentioned are mainly for regrowth, start with the first then you can add these later.

well sorry to burst your bubble but without finasteride or dutasteride your hairline is going to recede further than your current hairline, male pattern baldness's source is within the hormones.

Is there any product besides Propecia, Avodart, or those other oral finasteride and dutasteride products I can use to preserve what I have a bit longer? I thought spironolactone or one of the other products I spoke of would be able to accomplish that for me, but the above poster speaks as if these wouldn't be able to do that.

Topical spironolactone and Revivogen may be able to hold hair loss in check. I have read a bit on it and guys have made the transition to this from finasteride without hair loss. GourmetStyleWellness is just one example. I am in the process of changing over myself. Read as much as you can on this site and make your choice.

well i would alsow add rogain then.. it will help by getting more hair to regrow as you lose ground so in sence it will help. as the other topicals will help stop rogain adds on hairs. GL
But i would strongly consider finasteride. 2% had sides of those on finasteride and 1.2% had alsow sides.. and they where on placebo.. so chanses are very low, that u get sides. And if you get it you can stop and about 6-7 days youre body will return to how it was.
i have been on finasteride, rogain foam, and nizoral. for about 2 1/2 month.
have no sides, had maibe a litle less sex thaugts the first 2 weeks but everything worked as it should :D
And returned to as it was before after 2 weeks.. think about sex just as much now. :D
And my hair all over is getting thicker, and my hairline is going back to the old stage, slowly but stable.
Good luck to you and youre regiment
