Hi guys,
I know you get loads of posts from people praying they have Telogen Effluvium and not male pattern baldness and I'm trying not to be one of those. In fact if it is male pattern baldness I'm perfectly happy to jump straight on the finasteride so I guess I'm just looking for some advice.
I'm 29 and up until 9 months ago had perfect hair. Full, thick, great hairline and you could even look at it in the brightest hotel mirror and see no scalp.
I had cancer 2 years ago which meant chemotherapy and radiotherapy and my hair still grew back ace - even the chemo couldn't get rid of it all! The radiotherapy was over my thyroid and I've been advised there's at least a 50% chance I'll be hypothyroid within 3 years (and two have already passed!).
Fast forward to today and my hair has lost body all over and I can no longer style upwards in the sun as my scalp shines through. I actually had a haircut 7 weeks ago and no visible loss amd then again 1 week ago and the difference is remarkable. This has me wondering the following;
1) what are the odds of male pattern baldness developing that quickly?
2) should I jump straight on finasteride or is there a reasonable chance there may be something else wrong with me such as Telogen Effluvium or Thyroid issues?
3) is there a definitive test to understand whether it's male pattern baldness or something else?
In terms of the thinning it's completely diffuse. Still have my hairline but just lost density all over. I've ordered sme nanogen for the interim (used it during chemo and it was ace!) which I will use until I can get to the bottom of this.
Also, I have blood tests lined up to check thyroid. If I jump on propecia now will this effect my test results? Should I wait until after test results?
Any thoughts, stories etc appreciated.
