Ok so here is my story, in short.

Been on finasteride (0.5mg) for almost 5 months now, started as had receding hair line, not too major, with way i styled my hair (which is pretty long) it was unnoticeble to many and really i was doing it for myself; i wanted to thinking it up and perhapd lower the hairline a touch.

Now ive been on it for 5 months almost and it appears i may have some regrowth along what would have been my old hair line, so very encouraging.

However, i have gone from having very thick hair to pretty thin hair in a very shoirt amount of time which is very alarming, as well as losing a shed load of hair on the sides and the back. The sides are worst, around the ear, a lot of scalp is now visible and is really becoming a problem.

I think i am at a cross roads; do i stop the finasteride and hope i regain my hair at the sides and back and perhaps on top or do i persist with this and hope that it grows back in, as i say i am encouraged by the apparent re growth on the hair line.

Any advice from more experienced and knowledged users would be great, just really want to understand if finasteride can be causing the loss at the sides and if anyone has experienced this also.

Thanks

as everyone else will tell you - stick with it for at least a year, only then will you be able to tell what's going on

everybody's hair cycles have different lengths, some shorter, some longer, you're probably thinning in those areas as a result of the finasteride allowing the follicles a chance to strengthen up - it's just a shed, the hair will fill it thicker if you keep your dht-suppressing regimen up (trust me, i'm in the same scenario as you, no REAL hairloss, just noticeable to me, and i'm taking it to prevent it's conspicuousness for another 5 years)

the 1st year on finasteride is always a little up and down - I am coming up to completing my 4th year and it only stabilised towards around month 10 if I recall so stick with it - you may want to supplement with rogaine foam if you need a bit of extra help as its easy to use and doesnt complicate your regimen too much

thanks for the replies so far!

well i think i can feel some little growths all over my head, prickly little short hairs, mainly on the top and mid scalp, so fingers crossed cos that will releave some of the stress of the shed, knowing that its filling in. the sides though are still hard to tell with but if i dont lose anymore then i could probably live with that.

the hairline too seems to be accelerating in receding, although it may be the fact its lost its weight and thinned out making it look somewhat higher, still have a few hairs growing lower than the hairline though so there is hope!

what are both of your results so far with finasteride? how long did it take til you noticed results, have you maintained etc, did it work on your hair line etc?

thank again for the replies

all the best

it all depends on alot of different factors - how aggressive your hairloss is, how far it had progressed when you started treatment etc- my experience is very similar to the experience in the clinical trials - my overall hair count increased - i.e. the overall look of my hair has thickened but the hairline is pretty much the same as it was when I started - temples possibly slightly worse but overall I would say that after the first year I am maintaining my gains on propecia year on year for the last 4 that I have been on it and that is good enough for me
