Am I a good canidate for hair transplant?

Hi, I was hoping to get a few opinions as to whether I would be a good canidate for hair transplant. I've been on propecia and rogaine 5% foam for about 9 mths and although I've seen some improvements it hasn't been exactly everything that I had hoped or desired so know I'm seriously thinking of hair transplant. I'm 28 years old so I think it would be a good time to get it done as I am also single and looking to boost my confidence and find it hard sometimes, comments are aprreciated, thanks.

I would say you are a good candidate. Assuming that the finasteride is halting any further loss. Your loss is moderate but not excessive a top surgeon should be able to take a 3000graft strip from your 'virgin' scalp as long as you have at least average donor characteristics. This will totally rebuild that front third and should give you a good looking full head of hair appearance, allowing you to grow it all out a bit. I wish I was in your situation. :wink:

Are you saying then that you are still losing hair or have things stabilized?

If there is any way you could put up some more pics of the sides and the back including the crown, we could give you better feedback. One cannot fairly answer that question without viewing the entire scalp.

Do you also have loss in the crown (vertex)?

My real concern for you is what appears to be recession of your rim on both sides working its way back. Do you have any donor area thinning on either side of your family history? I am not saying that you do, but if there is history of it, the hair in the donor zones is not considered terminal, and you can potentially lose it as you age.

Any patient with a family history of donor area thinning should think twice before ever getting a hair transplant.

so if finasteride or any other treatment does not halt your hairloss to a certain point you have to wait until your completely bald on the top to get a hair transplant ????

hi mintymints, from your pic your temples look like they have receeded a far bit ? a side veiw would be helpful though

If one's hairloss HAS NOT stabilized from meds, then a hair transplant can in fact advance the loss to where the patient begins chasing their male pattern baldness with more and more surgery.

If one has extensive Norwood classes of loss in their family history, and the meds do not work, then any preliminary surgery can in fact permanently shock out the existing weak hair in the recipent area. And remember, a class seven will not have enough donor to cover the scalp, so why shock out what's there ahead of it's time. Even a class five or six may not have enough donor if they have low levels of density in their donor zones. Something to think about. :roll:

Now if this same patient has no efficiency from the meds, yet has LOW CLASSES of hairloss in his family history, he still has enough donor to cover what he is destined to lose over time. In other words, he should have plenty of donor to fall back on.

minty mints you need a better pic to show your head from top ,sides,front and back,then gillenator who has a lot of knowledge on hair transplants can give you a good idea

There are lots of guys who go that young and take a guess at how many have regretted it for not waiting to see how meds work and/or how fast they might progress? :freaked:

To add to what Gill said a patient should wait at least 6 months on meds. to work.

hey what happens if medications don't reverse or halt your hair loss and you want a hair transplant? Would you have to wait until you were totally bald to get a hair transplant then ?

go to armarni's site I have seen guys in their 20's got their hair transplant done and their hair looks great

You guys that jump at the first doctor that will do a transplant on a 20 year old need to understand the importance of the fact that you are risking being locked in for subsequent procedures depending on several variables at the time of your transplant.

I am sure this is common knowledge that if you are twenty years old... a Norwood 3. get a transplant that perfectly restores you to a NW1, that if you have further loss over time that resulted in a nw6 behind the permanent hairs that were transplanted... that you will in fact be risking a problem.

You guys know this yes? :dunno:

Yeah but what about when they're 30 or 40 and they've used up half of their donor hair on a low and dense nw1?

exactly a very good point also. I get very frightened when I see folks saying, "Hey Dr. Blah, blah will give you whatever hairline you want and at whatever age you are." :shakehead:
