Am I balding, and is it time to start minoxidil/finasteride or will they help?

I am about to turn 30 years old. My fiance noticed the hair on the crown of my head looked thinner and took a photo, and it sure looked like balding might be starting. I then took a look at my hairline and am worrying that is receding as well? Curious what anyone thinks.

Finally, is minoxidil or finasteride or whatever likely to do much to help?

Also, my grandfather lost his hair pretty early. My closest cousin almost completely lost his hair in his 20s. I've always thought my hair was fine until noticing it now

Don't take this the wrong way but I find it surprising that you even have to ask that. You're definitely balding. Start at least finasteride if you want to keep your hair. minoxidil would probably help your crown area fill in but I doubt it would do much for your hairline.

Definitely balding. And your only options are:

Finasteride, Dutasteride, RU58841, Minoxidil, Nizoral, CB-03-01.

Nothing else works, so don't even bother looking at shampoos or other snake oils. Enjoy the last days of your hair though.

Your hairline is pretty darn receded. You never noticed a change in your mid 20s?

I didn't notice but I guess I wasn't looking and just assumed I was fine or something. For reference, here are a couple older pics from my early 20s that seem to definitely show me that receding hairline :(

Thanks guys, I guess I have to debate the finasteride stuff. I hear a lot of horror stories but can't tell how true any of them are - myself and my wife are trying to have our first child now, is finasteride likely to impact this? Or is it just one of those things where I need to try it and just find out, probably the most logical answer..

I'm always shocked that there are people who discover their hairloss so late. What do you guys do, not look in the mirror at all?

I honestly think some people have the opposite of BDD and don't see the forest for the trees. Its all about perspective. Obviously the OP does not consider balding to start until you are about a NW3 which is actually considered beyond a mature hairline. However, perfectionist will see things differently and once they go beyond a NW1, all they see is balding. We have witnessed this plenty of times. I actually wish I had the opposite of BDD too.

Urgent treatment is required as described above. The reason it's urgent is that frontal 1/3 is beginning to break down from the rest and that could become very hard to style.

Hey curious as to what your regimen is like these days? Are you trying CB ? Bim? anything new?

Another question... since it was pointed out it was odd that I haven't noticed my hair loss, I went back and tried looking at any old photos I could find.

To me, my hairline in these photos from over 5 years ago looks basically the same. I can clearly tell I have thinning and that my crown is thinning, so I'm not denying that I am balding.. but my question is, is there some indication based on these old photos of whether or not it's going rapidly?

If I've kept this hairline for 5 years would I likely be OK to wait six months or so to consider starting finasteride, or is this something I should be fearing will be making my hair drop quickly?
