Am I losing hair already?

All my teens I've had long hair so I don't really know if this is sudden or if the hair is naturally like that. I am only 17... Is it possible to have that kind of hairline naturally? I've been freaking out all day. I am on Accutane, a powerful medication against acne, which is known to cause temporary, and in some cases permanent, hairloss.

I don't think this looks like balding at all. I agree - take pictures and monitor it. We don't know how your hairline used to look a year ago. From this picture this looks like a perfectly normal hairline. I know how you feel but don't panic! If you have no history of hairloss at that age in your family, then you have good chances that you are not.

Don't spend your time on these forums :) and drive yourself crazy. Really, just monitor it. And only if you're really sure then come back to this forum. I'm just suggesting to not put that weight on your shoulders. It's good to be aware but I'm sure you will be fine!!
Good luck.

I have not started to lose hair yet, this thread was made in a very panicked and impulsive moment. Still I'd like to discuss my chances of eventually going bald and when it might happen. :)

So, my father started losing hair in his early 40s, he's 50 now and a vertex III according to this scale: http://www.androgeneticalopecia.com/ima ... wood01.gif
All my uncles on his side of the family have similar hair and started losing it at a similar age.

On my mothers side I only have one uncle in his 50's who's a type II. My Grandpa in his 80's is at the same level as my father.

Who's genes did I inherit? Is it possible to know? What should I stay away from if I want to keep my hair (steroids etc etc)?

No. From what I've read it can come from your mom or your dad. Things like steroids wont necessarily cause male pattern baldness, but they'll accelerate it if you're already predisposed to having male pattern baldness. Other than that, theres not much you can really do, except try to catch it early and get on finasteride. If you're losing your hair, you'll f*****g know it. You'll see hair all on your hands in the shower, the texture of your hair will change a bit, your hairline will start moving back. Believe me, it'll be pretty obvious. Until then, don't worry about it. Chances are that at 17, you're not losing your hair. I mean of course there are people who do lose it that young, but its pretty rare. Also, accutane can cause hair loss, so I would suspect that to be the cause of hair loss at your age before I would expect it to be male pattern baldness.

It also seems to me that people who start losing their hair REALLY young (like 17 18) lose it quicker than people who start later. This is just anecdotal of course, I don't know if thats a fact, but anyone I've read about or met who started losing their hair in their teens is pretty much bald by their early 20s...which..if you were losing hair that fast..itd be f*****g noticeable

Thanks for the reply, so I guess I should expect to start losing hair when I'm about 40 then, since none in my family got it before that? What are the chances there'll be effective treatments by then, if anyone "in the loop" could give an estimation?

effective treatments in 10-20 years time. You can lose hair anytime, even if ur family members lost it in 40 years u could start losing it tommorow.

Really? So the only way to know you're "safe" is if in noone in your family has ever suffered from hairloss at any age?

No, you can't be safe. You can still inherit the balding genes from a motherf.cker who had died 100 years ago. You can't know that.

BTW, from this angle, your hair looks perfectly normal to me. But it would be easier for me to judge if you post clearer photos :)
