I think I am developing a bald spot on the back of my head, and in general just losing my hair. I have always had kind of thin hair, my mother has really thin hair and my father is bald. No one in the family has prematurely balded, all at least in the 30s I think. I am currently 18.

If I run my hands through my hair a few times a few strands will fall out, and they are usually shorter than the length of my hair, and pretty thin, I have been told that these could be follicles dying out.

Here are some pictures of where I fear I am losing my hair, any thoughts would be welcome.

It looks like hair loss to me, I'm sorry to say.

You are too young for finasteride. You might have some luck with minoxidil, but what I recommend is to start using Nizoral 2% two to three times a week. It's an anti-androgen that has been proven to inhibit hair loss. It also has some regrowth capabilities.

My hair loss started at 18 too. My crown wasn't as thinned out as yours, but my hairline started receding. How is your hairline?

I think that you need to share some Images from the front and back side too.You have just added Images from the middle area of your head only.
A bald spot on the back of my head is prominent and surely you are losing hairs...

Ok so here are some more pictures. I have included pictures from times when I had various hair lengths, currently I have the middle length hair. I don't think I have a receding hair line, but the hair on my temples is pretty wispy. And in the buzz cut, my hair looks thin, but I don't know for sure if it always has, or is something new.

Also these pictures are all from about a 6 month time span.

I don't think you're balding, it looks like a normal crown to me. Keep an eye on it though, maybe take photos every few months just to make sure it isn't getting thinner.

It's hard to tell. I mean.. I'm veering towards yes, due to the recession at the front coupled with suspiciously large "cowlick" at the top.

Has the cowlick gotten larger too? If so... yeah you might wanna really keep an eye...

OK here are some more pics, the first 8 are from a year ago, I can't really tell whether the cowlick has gotten thinner, its possible. As for my hair line, I also can't tell if it has receded, but it seems like it might have? It seems like one side of my hair line has receded further though.

Thanks for all the input so far, I just am looking for some closure on this issue, hopefully this will help.

i had the same temples/hairline as you around that age. im 30 now and my hairline JUST this year has moved up a bit.

my point, u should prob enjoy ur life and if u notice it getting worse in a few years start thinking about treatments.

Yeah, I am not overtly worried about it, I am worried about the crown though, I realize that there is a very high probability that I do eventually go bald, and I am ok with that, just not until I am 40 or so, ha.

Like I said earlier, my mother has very thin hair, so could the crown looking bald just be a product of a cowlick + thin hair that makes it look worse?

After looking at some of your other pictures, I think you are definitely at the beginning stages of hair loss. The crown is definitely thin, and the buzzed pictures of your hair show some thinning along the hairline.

The good news is that when your hair is longer, you look like you have thick hair in every place but the crown. I would definitely start with the Nizoral and see how that works. It will act as an anti-androgen which will inhibit additional loss, and it has some regrowth capabilities as well. You are probably too young for the other treatments.

Hmmm, well thats not good, are there any second opinions out there? Does there seem to be thinning at the crown between now and a year ago, looking at the pictures from the buzzcut in the first set of pictures and the last set of pictures. I felt it looked about the same, maybe the hair loss is just really slow.

Also what Norwood number would I be considered, I've looked at that chart before, and can't really seem to find one that fits, mainly because while my crown could be thinning, I don't really see the classic recession of my hairline.

Yeah using a low maintenance and light regimen might be intelligent as a kind of planning for the future, but only if it bothers you. Everyone is different that's the thing!

Hmmm, I will consider that, right now I guess I am still in disbelief that I could be going bald so young. My family doesn't have any history of early balding, but I guess it can still happen?

Also, going back to my previous question, does it look like the crown has thinned since a year ago.

Fine, in decent shape, no medical problems or anything like that. I'm only 18 so life hasn't taken as much of a toll on me yet. I'm about 6 feet , 175 pounds. Not much else to report on the health front.

hm.. maybe it IS just genes then.

Digestive and stress issues do seem to have effects on hair loss, no matter how much people may claim they don't.

Maybe in your case it is just genetic though, assuming you do have it.

Maybe you could just continue to keep and eye on it and see how it does.

With me the only advantage to still having longer hair is my hair loss is OBVIOUS. I can actually see visibly when a hair is in telogen and just pull it out with great ease. It sucks. lol
