She talks about the stigma of male pattern baldness. The first comment was mean but there are some great responses in there too. Those of us with significant hair loss are in a uniquely ****ed situation because it is socially acceptable to berate hair loss suffers but it is not ok for us to talk/vent or do anything about it for fear of being dismissed as petty and vain, bitter. The combination of it being a non lethal condition with the fact that it is considered a "male vanity" issue basically means that nobody will take the suffering of the bald man seriously whilst simultaneously being a target for hate and social prejudice. Read the article, comments and tell me what you think.

Thanks Fred, when it comes to the topic of descrimination I believe there are two types, active and passive. Active is like segregation, white drinking fountain only which is more official while passive is just the prejudiced attitudes that are directed at the descriminated demographic in question. No doubt that the passive applies more in the case of baldness.... although I can conjure up one place that openly and actively descriminates against bald and balding men, the sperm bank! The implications of that fact and the message it sends I find to be VERY significant.

it's odd. if you get disfigured in an accident, or scarred then (most) people sympathise or go out of their way to be nice/helpful to you - you've been through a trauma that wasn't your fault

But male pattern baldness is seen as something of a 'joke' - the subject for stand-up comedians. Anyone who complains about it 'has no sense of humour' and told to just 'get over it'

even obese people seem to get more sympathy - addiction is a 'disease' so it's not their fault they're fat. Blame the fast-food corporations. But if you go bald, it is your fault. and if you get upset or depressed about it you should just 'man up' as it's not a serious problem.

Most of the time it's women who have this noxious attitude, but I'm surprised how many men also take this view, considering how prevalant male pattern baldness is - it can happen to anyone with a pair of balls at any time. No one's immune. I've heard some men smugly say 'oh none of the men in my family are bald so it won't happen to me....' HA!

But that's changing with our generation, before there was no place to talk about it and people would usually hide the fact that they took rogaine.

I also found the part about how BDD is directly related to male pattern baldness interesting. It makes me think that I never got over my BDD, it just shifted... The thing about BDD is it not just distorts the way you see yourself but also how you perceive how other people see you. IOW, it feels like everyone is starring at you and judging you harshly. I know some of you may take that as a reason to call someone paranoid but the truth exists outside of this fact.... it's just that the combination of the two can be very severe and result in social anxiety disorder.

True. But UCMan wont have to directly see the pain of balding in his kid at least.
His daughter might, if she has a baby, but she wont know the pain, as she would not have had the experience of balding.

Women can still go bald it happens all the time dont think because its a girl there isnt a chance she will go bald...there is a version of male pattern baldness (fpb) for women you know.

imagine though if he had a son and the son didn't go bald? How resentful he would feel....

There was a period of a few years where my diffuse was noticeable but I kept it at it's normal length. During that period I don't even think I was fully aware of my situation. Maybe I was in strong denial but my point is we conceived our daughter around that time. So I didn't think I had a problem at the time. My daughter carries the balding gene for sure because her mom's side of the family has many bald heads... but I would like to think that by the time my great grandson is at a relevant age to be concerned with hair loss that a cure would be readily available by then. But I'm glad I got a daughter.

Thank you Mr. White. Another point I found particularly poigniant is why must we be sexy in the workforce or out shopping for grocceries or waiting in line at the DMV? It's like you aren't a valid human being unless you are considered universally sexy. I blame those who habitually confuse beauty with virtue. It has been proven in studies that people assume the beautiful people are smarter, kinder and more capable... but the flip side to that is the assumption that non aesthetic folks are vile scoundrels. "why can't baldness just be baldness, not a sign of a fundamental character flaw." Boy did he hit the nail on the head when he said that because that is precisely how many people regard the bald! It is evidence of an extremely unfair and prejudicial bias.

What a load of bull if you believe this here in the UK you have many programs of "beautiful" people which people consider dumb as **** some like to call the women for example "bimbos"...you really believe anything you read you do dont you.


And speaking of that article you see the bottom? where some girls were saying their BFS early 20s or in 20s was going bald but didnt mind? one said she still thought her BF was attractive...but you will just skip that wont you and just look at the negatives the "hate".
