Hey, I'm 18.5 right now.

I started minoxidil right after I became 17, fully knowing that it wouldn't suffice for long.
I am going to start with finasteride in a week or so, and am trying to go into it as clear-minded as possible so I won't be overly paranoid in regards to side-effects.

Minoxidil doesn't do anything about the core problem, but you should try to postpone starting finasteride so your body is fully grown.
Who would have thought guys like us would be jealous of a 25-year old in the same situation....

Good luck

How did it go for you??

I had a huge initial shedd that lasted for ~2months(during the summer 2011). Then throughout the winter I experienced great hair regrowth. My receding hairline did unfortunately not improve but the overall thickness of the hair did. The vertex area got much better.

It remained like that until summer-12 until I once again got a big shedd that lasted all summer. Now I think I'm having some regrowth again, hair was real bad this summer but yeah I think it's improving again, going back to normal hopefully

Pre-finas I was NW2.5 with vertex thinning (age:17). Today I'm maybe NW2 with barley noticable vertex thinning. If you look in a mirror with bright lights you will notice it's little bit thinner in the vertex than the rest of my head but it's much better than it was 1.5 years ago

So far I haven't had any sides

prescription(propecia) from my doctor. Lucky me, I sort of knew him and I went to his house where he lives and explained my situation and he agreed that finasteride was my best shot

Yeah i did shave it all of this summer actually since the shedd was so bad.. it has grown out by now though

I've seen your pics actually and I personally think that finasteride can help you out massively. As finasteride thickens hair rather than rebuilds a hairline

i can get finpecia. should i secretly do it and not tell my parents?

People are not likely to tell you to lie to your parents, or disregard what your doctor says. Why? Because those arent good things in general. Only you can decide if doing those things are necessary. You will have to decide for yourself whether you should do that after weighing the risk/ benefit for yourself and taking responsibility for the choice for yourself as an adult (Age 18 doesn't magically make you an adult, but thinking/maturity do... come at different times for different people). And doctors aren't likely to tell you to use finasteride when it is not approved for people under age 18 (though the cutoff age of 18 was likely somewhat arbitrary.. safety simply wasnt studied for 17 year olds), just like doctors aren't likely to tell you that it is ok to use dutasteride which has not been approved for hair loss in men. Why? Because when they recommend medications for unapproved/ off-lable uses they are assuming some risk of responsibility not backed up fully by studies/ the FDA. Leaving you as the only person able to make that tough decision. Random/ anonymous people on the internet really can't take the responsibility for making the best decision for you. Only you can. My best recommendation is to read a lot, consider your current development, and then do what you feel is best for you, understanding that you (not the internet) have responsibility for making the best decision for you. There really isn't data on 17 year olds because it wasn't studied... Are 17 year olds so different from 18 year olds (which finasteride was approved for)? Likely, no... But again, not proven. You will have to choose for yourself. Are side-effects anywhere near what it seems by reading internet posts? Likely no (selection bias), studies likely give a more realistic impression of risk of side effects... http://www.baldingblog.com/2011/01/26/propecia-and-the-15-side-effects-myth/
