I'm 25 and i've been diffuse balding since i was 20. I started shaving my head about a year ago. anyway, i've been on rogaine and propecia for about 3 years now and they've actually helped me to maintain. well, not completely, but i know once i go off propecia my hair will go fast . . . real fast. anyway, so after 3 years, i'm just tired of the propecia side effects on my schlong. it's gotten to the point where masturbating is a chore, and at my age that's just not right. how do i know it's the propecia? well, i'm in a long distance relationship and see my girl about once every few months. after several very embarrassing moments when i couldn't get it up, i decided to experiment. so about a week before i would see her i would cease with the finasteride, and just like magic it would harder than a metal pole. but it's just not the hardness, it's the desire that goes up. i don't feel numb anymore and i actually crave sex. i know i could go on v**** or cialis and get it up again while staying on finasteride, but those drugs only make me hard, they restore my desire to have sex . . . my libido. yea, i've been on finasteride for 3 years so i'm obviously not one of the peeps that is scared of popping pills or whatever. i'll take any side effect if it comes with a great benefit. unfortunately, for me anyway, finasteride is too harsh on my sex drive, so i've decided to call it quits. hairloss is embarrassing, but not being able to perform in the sac is WAY more embarassing. and like i said, it's not a simple matter of popping a v****, because those drugs may get the blood flowing down there but they do nothing for my libido. why am i writing this? just for a little support. it's a big step to take the plunge. it will be personally worth it, however, because i will once again have my sex drive back!! thanks for listening.

Hey man! I know that sucks and I've heard the same story many times. You gotta do what you gotta do! If finasteride is impacting your sex life that much then I say your making the right choice by getting off it. You still have minoxidil so keep using it and you still could consider a topical antiandrogen like fluridil or maybe even spironolactone. You may also wish to try out the lasercomb. It seems to be working good for me! I also had to stop using propecia, due to side effects, and it really brought me down. Keep in mind however, that there are other things you could try. Don't throw in the towel yet!

Just curious, how much finasteride are you taking?
Are you doing the 1.25mg/day? If so, lots of people who had probs at that dosage found they *went away* at the FDA approved 1mg / day treatment.

no i've been at 1 mg for 3 years now. another thing (and i dont want to get to graphic, but this is just for people's info), like when i, ahem, c*m or whatever, the $hit just dribbles out and the orgasim lasts about half a second. when i get off finasteride though i have really strong (normal?) ones. oh well, i gotta do what i gotta do. i dont' know about that laser comb thing. . .

Honestly my limbido has been really low lately. No probs getting and maintaining hardness, but for some reason I just dont feel like f*****g my girlfriend too bad who Ive only been screwing a few weeks. You would think I would be dying to get into her pants but Im just not very interested. She offerred to give me a bj the other day and I declined, I think she is onto me now.

qqq Try reducing your dose all the way down to 0.2mg, a dose which Merck's own trials have shown to yield almost identical 5-alpha-reductase inhibition as 1mg.
See how you get on at this level, side effects are likely to be reduced whilst giving you almost the same benifit as a 1mg finasteride dose.

Thinning -- try going off finasteride for a week and see if you get your sex drive back. i get mine back after a week, so it doesn't take long for me. this experimentation was the only way i could determine if it was the finasteride or some other cause. luckily, i'm in a very trusting relationship so i was able to play around with the propecia and not have to worry about too much pressure to perform. i would hate to be in a situatin with a new girl where there is that pressure. and in case anyone is wondering, with me it is definitely not placebo. i mean, it is literally night and day (and i've tried this little experiment many, many times).
