M/23. Father and paternal grandfather both have a full head of hair, maternal grandfather is probably a NW4 now but was a NW2-3 until about 5 years ago (he’s in his mid 70s now). However, I have both a maternal and paternal uncle with significant hair loss in their 50s. I’m starting to freak out, it looks like I have temple recession and possible crown thinning. My hair has always been very thin and fine, so to be honest, I’m not sure what my crown looked like when I was younger, it could be the same. The crown picture is under a very bright office light. What do you all think? My anxiety is going through the roof with this, it’s affecting my daily life and work.

Your crown actually looks pretty good, you should get better pictures of it though.
Hairline looks like it could be receding to be honest, do you have any pictures of your hairline from year ago? Or in past?

Unfortunately, no. I’ve always kept my bangs long and hair pretty shaggy, so I don’t have any old pictures actually showing my hairline.

crown looks good. its hard to tell about your hairline but it could just be your mature hairline coming in. rn your hair looks good but just keep an eye on it for now and try not to worry.

The crown is in good shape but it's definitely starting to go. Recession has you in NW2 territory. Not a disaster by any means, most normies won't even notice. 23 is the perfect age to start treatment. you're now past the point where anti-androgens could affect your development. Start on minoxidil and Nizoral, and start researching finasteride. You've started this difficult journey but you're in a good place, keep calm and remember science is the key.

Is there any chance the recession just halts at NW2 for a while? I’ve read online where it’s common for people to recede to NW2 in their 20s and then stay there for decades. I’ve researched finasteride and I’m a little hesistant to take it. I’m sure it’s a vocal minority, but those sides are no joke. On the hand, I know finasteride is the only long term solution we currently have available. I feel like I would just be trading anxiety about hair loss for anxiety about finasteride side effects and effectiveness. Not sure what to do.

Take finasteride bro. I’m a few years older then you and much more bald because I delayed treatment. I have had zero sides from finasteride.

I am going to tell you what I wish someone had told me ...... YOU ARE GOING BALD. It’s not noticeable but most likely it will be in a few years. Your hair is diffusing on the crown.

According to my doctor the sides from finasteride go away after awhile and you can avoid them by starting with 1 pill ever three days for a week then 1 pill every two days for a week before going to 1 pill every day

To answer your question based on your hairline and diffusion at the crown your hair more than just a mature hairline. Your balding. If it was a “mature hairline you would not see any baldness at the crown

I appreciate everyone’s honesty with it all. I just used Spruce to get a dermatologist’s opinion and he believes I have beginning signs of male pattern baldness as well and prescribed me finasteride. So I’m giving finasteride a shot and hoping for the best. Hopefully I’m a good responder and caught it early enough to buy me some more hair filled years. I guess we will see. Balding this young sucks, but I guess there are a lot worse things that could happen in life.
