They don't sleep enough, or well enough. You make growth hormone during deep sleep. You also make or set a lot of other body functions and hormones when you sleep. Growth hormone grows muscles and burns fat, even if you don't exercise. Sleep also affects your thyroid and metabolism.
But if you exercise at the right intensity, you produce 3x as much growth hormone as you would if you did not exercise at all. That is of course if you sleep enough.
And leaving your computer on at night or having other light/noise sources can reduce deep sleep. Go to bed when you feel sleepy, and sleep long enough that it is not a chore to get out of bed in the morning. Yeah, we all like to snooze, but you should not feel so extremely sleepy when your alarm forces you awake.
And to make growth hormone, your body must make melatonin first. But if your gland calcifies, as most do with age from not getting enough vitamin K (found in leafy greens), then it won't make enough melatonin any more. That is one of the reasons old people don't sleep as deep.
The average 50 year old makes 1/3 as much growth hormone as the average 25 year old. No wonder they are aging so fast.
