another take on Ketoconazole

I have read a lot of promising studies lately on ketoconazole, that is the stuff in nizoral that is supposedly good for your hair. In particular, the study of S. Inui presented as a letter to the editor in the J. Derm, and the study by Pieard found on pubmed seems promising.

Ketoconazole has proven abilities as an anti- androgen, anti- inflammatory, anti- fungal and hair growing agent. Essentially, it has all the properties of a hair loss remedy we could ever want. Still, it doesn´t really give that great results.
Why is that?

Well, first of all, it could be that even though it has hair growing benefits, it simply isn´t effective enough. It has a proven additive effect with finasteride, but alone it just isn´t that great. And you can´t really get it in a more concentrated form (say 5%...)
Secondly the recommended usage is 3-4 times a week, but it makes sense that any topical, weak, formula should be applied at least once or maybe even twice a day (like spironolactone or revivogen). But washing your hair twice a day with an anti- dandruff shampoo would probably do more harm than good; the soap could irritate the skin, dry out your scalp and dry out your hair, which, even though you have a full head of hair, does not look good (the hair looks weak, thin and "crispy", and the scalp looks red and flaky).

Yet, if the hair- growing, anti- androgen benefits are true (as they probably are, given all the research and data), one would clearly benefit from using ketoconazole on a daily regular basis. So how do you do this without washing your hair all the time?

You buy a cream.

Recently I got a prescription for topical ketoconazole 2% cream. As an experiment, I will try to apply this 2 times a day for the next following months. I will use a mild, non irritating cheap pharmacy shampoo a couple of days a week in addition, and maybe mix it (the cream) with a lotion if it irritates my scalp.
As my current regime only consists of finasteride and nizoral shampoo every other day, this little experiment will hopefully tell if more frequent use of ketoconazole has any greater effect than the regular use.

Man, it sounds totally wrong but give it a try if you are really decided for that!
How can you compare shampoos to lotions? And it is also known that using shampoo daily with no break can be bad for the scalp because the body/scalp gets used to the shampoo and its medicine and no effects are more shown.
You gotta watch out about it.
Plus, using ketoconazole cream on the scalp? It might give some reactions, get it dry, etc. Watch out, and keep us updated!

I have been using nizoral 2% shampoo for the last 4 months and this damn itching that was driving me crazy disappeared pretty quickly on this stuff. And if before i could pull out 5-10 hairs easily from any spot now i get 0-3 hairs. Some thickening is also seen. I use it once everyday for 15min. Sometimes i use 2% cream but whole scalp itches after cream so i rarely use it. I don't expect it to regrow or stop anything i'm just so glad that i got rid of this neverending itching when you just drop anything that you are doing and scrub it viciously. Also hair came out always from the spot where the itch was. minoxidil and finasteride had same effect on the itch but i stopped using them cause of sides. So i use nizoral only and it's definitely doing something.

So you're on finasteride and think the sides are coming from the keto?

So far, I haven't noticed any difference from just using the shampoo. I mix it with aloe vera, but it stil itches a little bit.

Obviously, 2x/day is overkill so starting 2010 I'm going for every morning.

i should note that my baseline is pretty good, I maintained great with just finasteride and nizoral shampoo. The hair on top could still be thicker, though...

I'm still not sure but this might be the reason why I discontinued finasteride. Everything was alright during the first 4 months and a half and then I started to use nizoral 1% daily and some days later spironolactone 2% liquid at night.

I can't recall exactly the point at which I felt my libido was down because it came up slowly after a 2 or 3 week period. spironolactone was the first thing I dropped, noticing improvement in my lowered blood pressure. Libido and erections were still awful so I lowered finasteride dose to 0.25 and finally discontinued the treatment.

Thought it should be due to finasteride's slow AR1 inhibition but now I'm using Nizoral alone and despite I'm feeling better and achieving an erection is no longer any problem my libido is pretty down at nights (I've never felt something like this before). Been noticing this just lately..

I'm not going to use Nizoral this week.. let's see what happens.

hey guys!

I've been 1 week away from Nizoral and surprisingly things have improved so much. Improvement started after 4 days of discontinuing the champoo. A short list of things I've noticed:

- Better sleep. I no longer get up early in the morning before the alarm rings.
- More energy, less fatige. I improved my 10km time from 47'14" to.. 44'45"! I think this is amazing in 1 week time!
- Libido improvement, despite I would say it's still not back to baseline.
- My mood has definitely changed for good. I feel more active and stable.

I would say Nizoral on a daily basis has helped my hair a lot, so this is the downside.. :(

I had also libido sides from the Keto... BUT! I made a plan fot he nizoral.

In the manual you can see that, it is recommend to use 2-3 times a week, the staying time is 3-5 minutes, and the dose is a "hand palm". The "hand palm" dose is 3-4 ml nizoral. This is 12 times per month, and 36-48ml nizoral, with 5 minutes staying time.

So the daily dose is 1,2ml-1,6ml, or 0,6ml-0,8ml morning and night with 5 minutes staying :)

i really don't see how keto shampoo can cause such serious side effects as fatigue and lowered libido... anybody else experience this?
