One of the big 3 Ketaconazole, is an anti-fungal commonly used because a lot of people with hair loss have overactive yeast on their scalps. The infestation of yeast causes an increase in inflammation and hair loss. Bacteria naturally produce fungicides and compete with yeast for resources/space in your body/gut/scalp.

When you take antibiotics these kill off bacteria both good and bad. When you've lessened your natural colonies of good bacteria you end up both decreasing the fungicides they produce as well as open up a bunch of new space for yeasts to grow in. As the yeasts pick up in number then both your inflammation and hair loss increases. This is the same reason why taking probiotics/yogurt has been shown to lessen hair loss in many men.

I wouldn't presume to know that you in fact don't have bacterial folliculitis so as soon as your prescription of the antibiotics are done, be sure to get on both some anti-fungals (nizoral/coal tar/athlete's foot cream/nystatin) and some probiotics (capsules or real kimchi/real sauerkraut/live yogurt).

But there are also reports from others that claim taking antibiotics halted their hair loss. I have read a couple of these myself on another forum.

While I am on antibiotics my hair loss (at least, hair fall/shedding) comes to a complete halt. However, as soon as I stop taking them, it seems to increase dramatically for a while (almost as if "catching up" to where I would've been).

It's to do with suppressing inflammation and inhibiting MMP.

I've considered taking doxycycline long-term as a treatment but I guess you can't really take it forever.

Perhaps Brains would know - would taking probiotics with antibiotics (obviously at different times of the day) be a away to combat the negative effects on gut flora?

My guess would be no, probiotic supplementation already has a pretty low yield considering how many bacteria you normally take with each pill. Taking both of those at the same time seems like it would kill the bacteria long before they got a chance to attempt to colonize.

Have you tried topical antibiotic application to the scalp? Do you think this would provide some level of relief? Wondering more for curiosities sake, such application would also be a temporary bandage. Technically your immune system shouldn't be letting such things get to that state so if such an infection keeps recurring you need to figure out what's causing the compromise of your immune system.

No. And possibly.

I don't have a bacterial infection. Like I said, the positive effects on hair loss don't come from the antibacterial action but rather the anti-inflammatory action and more specifically the MMP-inhibition.

Look at the following links if you are interested:

However saying that, I do have a compromised immune system. I had a stool test which showed practically zero levels of all good bacteria which can't be good (thankfully no signs of candida though). I've been loading up on probiotics and yoghurt but from what I gather it takes a long time to build up these levels again.

Ok so my folliculitis is getting pretty bad and already being diffused and now gonna have to take antibiotics long term will really suck. Would I be able to take probiotics right after taking antibiotics?
