Any early balders succesfully maintain long term on finasteride?

It seems to me that most people who start losing hair in their teens have pretty aggressive balding genes.
I started losing at 19 and Finasteride is unsuccessful at fully stopping my hair loss and I am considering switching to Dutasteride.

Has anyone who started balding in their teens successfully maintained long term (more than 5 years) on Finasteride alone?

I've yet to see a case for that.
It seems that most people who start to bald that early would probably be better off just using Dutasteride from the start and save themselves another year or two of losing hair needlessly.

There was a ten-year study published a while back. A lot of people were above baseline after ten years. How much longer-term do you need?

Right. And what did that study show?

That finasteride was less effective in people who start balding very early.

Obviously, an imperfect treatment will be weaker against people who have a more aggressive version of the disease.

Yes, obviously. Which is why I made this thread in the first place - to survey people who are aggressive, early balders.
I want to hear if there are any of them for whom Finasteride was enough.
And if it wasn't, I want to hear if they managed to stop it with Dutasteride.
Or something else.

You get me?

How much above baseline though? I for one, do not ever want to return to baseline, or just slightly above baseline.

Finasteride is buying time, we need a more effective treatment for long term results. Histogen, Replicel, that Italian lotion or perhaps even spironolacetone...

I started finasteride when I was younger than 17. I started losing hair early and I noticed it early too. When I started finasteride my hairline was visually normal (norwood 0) but started thinning. I've been on finasteride for more than 7 years and until 1 year ago my hair was basically maintained, with slight thinning and receding of hairline. Thinning and receding's been accelerating since then. I quit finasteride due to sides. I've been on minoxidil too.

So yes I do think it's possible to maintain your hair if you started early. The tricky part is if you started regimen early you generally have a lower norwood level to start with, which is obviously harder to maintain above the base line if you're comparing to people starting finasteride at norwood 2+

finasteride can be a cure basically. The stronger you respond in the first year, the better for long term success. I know what OP is asking and it's tougher for the medication to work as a whole. However, looking at the success section there are some young people with an impressive turnaround which has been maintained.

OP: If you're losing hair on finasteride at the start, you are not a responder. Switch to dutasteride asap once you have weighed benefits v risks up.

It can work in anyone. If you want to risk it then use dutasteride very early on and you might not lose much if any hair. A bit riskier though for sure

Well, due to the fact that I keep seeing further losses of hair despite 1.25 mg of Finasteride every day for almost 9 months, I can take that as a clear sign that it's not working and isn't going to... so, I guess it's time to step up.

I have baldness on both sides of the family and I started losing at 19 - it's not that much of a surprise that I have to go hard or go home.

Yeah thats too bad. Start as early as possible, and maybe even dutasteride if you must. There are pictures of twins where one on dutasteride is like Norwood 1 still, and the other is majorly balding. The stuff definitely works, but timing is key. After male pattern baldness starts it cant be reversed. Better to try the big guns early and run risks of not needing it verses coming here as Norwood 4 and starting.

I have been on finasteride since 19 and I m on it for 17 months, my hair loss only started to show signs of stabilazation after one year mark, and around 14 month full stabilaztion so if I were you I would give it a full year and than considered switching to dutasteride

I started receeding at 16/17. Got on finasteride at 18 which didn't work. I was on that for a year and a half before switching to dutasteride. On the for same again and I wasn't even able to slow the natural process down. I also anecdotally believe that my frontal thinning worsened on both.

That f***** sucks god damnit. Worst thing is, 2-3 months ago when minoxidil fully kicked in I gained a good amount of density back and could have a decent haircut. Then I noticed it kinda getting thin again. So I cut my hair short, and now I see how much worse it's gotten in the past 5 months that I've had longer hair. I can see my scalp much more on certain areas on the front. Oh well. I'll start gathering money for dutasteride and then talk to my Doctor about 'upgrading' to that. If that doesn't work I don't know what I'm gonna do. Probably also add RU and sell my soul to afford all that ****.

Started finasteride at age 19. Now 21 and on Dutasteride. I've gone from a norwood 1 to as NW3 and I guess 2017 is my last year with hair in the front.

We really do need a good AR antagonist like CB or something. Its the big angle we are missing, and those spikes in T from current treatments cant be good for hair.
