Does anyone here have any experience with Dr. Shapiro of Minnesota? I have heard good things about him in the past, but would like to hear more, especially if you have had work done by him.

Dr. Shapiro did my first hair transplant in early 1996 and freed me from Hair Club (hair systems). His hairlines are second to none! I will be doing my next touch-up procedure with him or Dr. Paul Rose sometime later this year. I am fifty years old and will be adding just a little more density especially in the crown. :hairy:

Hey Gill, I'm also 50. It's a great age to both look and feel younger.

I'm 28 years old and have been looking into hair transplant for quite some time. My worry is how far my hairloss will go, and if I will look very unatural a few years from now if I get an hair transplant now. Does Dr. Shapiro (or all good hair transplant physicians) plan for this? Does anyone have any pictures of your hair transplant experience with Shapiro? Any information I can get would be great. Thanks

Cool Gorpy! I know you very happy with your results from Dr. Keene in Arizona. :D She used to work in Dr. Shapiro's clinic in Minneapolis, maybe something you already know. Anyway man, glad you're enjoying life at 50!

Younggunz177,

Are you on a medicinal regimen? Honestly, no one can predict the progression of male pattern baldness in precise terms. There are no guarantees. HOWEVER, consider your family history of male pattern baldness on both sides maternal and paternal. IF there are extensive classes of male pattern baldness and you're losing hair yourself (especially at a younger age) then you can sensibly conclude that you bear the same genetic predisposition as them. HOWEVER, if one side has male pattern baldness and the other does not, you could hit something in between OR realize the same degree of male pattern baldness as your blood relatives. Not always BUT generally speaking, the earlier male pattern baldness sets in (late teens to early 20's) the more probable that individual will eventually reach the more advanced classes of hairloss. There's not enough donor to cover the entire area of loss so EITHER one has to compromise their goals (until HM or cloning becomes viable) or DECIDE TO NOT GET A hair transplant until you actually see how extensive one's hairloss becomes over time. I waited until I was 41 before I got my first hair transplant in 1996. You can contact me at the more.hair e-mail address noted below and I'll forward you my pics. :D

Remember, once you start surgical hair restoration you are committed. There is no cure for male pattern baldness at present and hair transplants won't cure male pattern baldness either. Food for thought. YES, Dr. Shapiro definitely takes into consideration lifetime progression of male pattern baldness on all of his patients and he subsequently is animate about life-long planning. :)

At 28, I'm around a Norwood 4. As far as hairloss, I've almost caught up to my father, and my brother is a little further along then both my father and I at the age of 35. I have used minoxidil, revivogen, and dr.proctors formula with no success at all. Its been about 12 months. Just throwing out some more info if it helps with suggestions. I have refrained from the use of Propecia, but my brother used it for two years and didn't seem to retain or regrow. I think another problem is that I'm pretty much blonde, which I have heard makes it harder for hair transplant's...is that correct?

Everyone responds to medications differently so just because your brother did not have good results from it that does not mean you will not have efficacy with it. You'll never know until you try yourself but since I am not a physician I am going to recommend strongly that you discuss this with your doctor of choice.

If you are near your father's Norwood class at 28 and I presume you're implying class 5, are there any other family members in the Norwood 6 or 7 stages alive or passed on?

BTW, I have never heard any doctor render the opinion that blonde-haired patients have less potential or success. Feel free to e-mail your pics and I'll gladly give you my unbiased honest opinion.

I'm between a 4 and a 5V, and that is where my father is as well. Although I have a bit more hair, it looks a little thinner because it's blonde. My brother's hair loss is a little worse in the front then my father and I. He had an hair transplant about 10 years ago, so of course he is highly against me getting an hair transplant myself because of his bad experience. His hair transplant is very pluggy and he can no longer have very short hair because of the larger scar on the back of his head. It actually doesn't look that bad because it is all on the crown. That in itself tells how hair transplant's have changed over the years.

My grandfather on my mother's side had very thick hair all his life. My grandfather on my dads side has about the same hair loss as my father. So my grandfather, dad, and I have almost the same hair line, with mine still a little ways to go to catch up. Not too far behind though I don't think. I would assume though that I will have to have a few hair transplants as my hairloss progresses.

I emailed you as you offered to send me pictures. Did you get it? Let me know if you did, then I will send you my pics once I know I have sent my email to the right address. Thank you so much for your help and suggestions!!

Dr. Shapiro is very good. If you go with him it would be with one of the best. My only suggestion is that you start to get a grasp on density, which is not an easy concept. I would say that 30 grafts per cm2 is probably a minimum you would want to go with. There is much talk about 40, 50, 60 + grafts per cm2, and that's all ok if you have the donar hair to cover that. There are many variables, but it's always best to know ahead of time what you can expect.

Thanks for your input. I've looked at Shapiro's consultation area of his website to look into density. I was guessing I need 2000-2500, but we'll see when I get a consultation. They do offer a phone consultation if you email them your pictures, but I would much rather get a consultation in person.

Yes I did receive both of your e-mails and I see you did receive my pics. Thanks for the compliments. I also answered your other concerns in your most recent e-mail to me. Let me know how things go. :)

Hey gillenator,

I'll get those photos to you real soon. My camera is just in the shop right now; friend dropped it. Hopefully my hair isn't too short for you to give me a good idea as to how much Shapiro may suggest for me. Thanks for your help.
