I'm starting to get desperate enough that I'm looking at the technical sales jobs. Except, I'm very self-conscious about being bald and homely. When I imagine most salesmen, I think "handsome."

So, is it possible to do OK as a homely bald salesman?

i was in events sales for 6 years, looks matter when dealing with other salesmen but not customers.

i think my baldness made it easy to master the 'this price sells itself so i dont need to bother a f*** trying with you lot' look, it served me well lol.

played it totally dead pan and to the point, when salesmen are too flashy or talkative then it fails. most people are cynical as sh*t with 'em to begin with, the chat just makes it worse. it is possible to make people think theyd be stupid to turn down a price you know.... looking acceptably bad can actually help.

IMO soooo linked to the old question about pulling women.

It is all about the confidence.

Think about when you buy something, I bet you wouldn't really consider whether or not the person selling you something had hair.

However would you be put off buying something by a person who came across as lacking confidence, hell yes you would!

Times are tough whatever continental plate you're on, but if you're considering sales out of desperation, seriously consider what you can do and earn a living without being desperate, trust me you'll be happier.

(at i guess I'd say you're IT atm but that's just a hunch)

Sound advice and an example of confidence from someone in the game!

I've always though sales is a decent thing to get into if you're selling something worth having, however my preconception is *normally* they need sales guys to sell sh*t, at that point I'd crumble and be useless.

Don't overestimate the importance of looks. What matters is having a friendly and trustworthy demeanour. People are more likely to buy from you if they like you. Part of that may be looks, but a lot of it isn't. A guy buying from a girl may care what she looks like (because that's how you people are), but a guy buying from a guy doesn't give a hoot.

A good deal is a good deal, and if you can make what you're selling sound like one, that's all that matters.

Don't feel bad about going into sales, there is an element of sales and marketing in most jobs, especially the high paying ones. Most of the worlds wealthiest people get there by being in sales :)

As for looks, well unless you're going to sell vanity products then it won't matter. Confidence, demeanour and knowing when to close the deal will be far more useful to you than a thick mop of hair.

What would be your costumers like when you are into technical sales? This is more a B2B thing, isn´t it? I think good looks might even be a disadvantage in this context.

My uncle has a small firm with about 20 employees. Don´t wanna go into details but he is selling some complicated software for firms. Both of his salesmen are in their late 40s/early 50s. One is fat, the other one is bald.

Well, exactly..

Even if we aren't in sales, we still have to market ourselves or our work.

I completely agree that it's the marketing that brings success.

Just to reiterate what other posters have said, I think it all comes down to maximizing with what you've got.

I work as a talent agent in the entertainment business. Think about what it's like to be losing my hair when I have to deal with beautiful people all day.

I have confidence in my abilities and I think it shows.
