Question ID:3932 | topical dutasteride?? | Asked on 06/11/02
Charlie asked: "Dr Lee - I would be interested in your opinion regarding the possible application of dutasteride (assuming it's launched) topically for the treatment of male pattern baldness. I have noticed a couple of products recently that offer a topical form of finasteride (fina-lotion)and that Merck is looking at preparing a topical product. thanks in advance"
Dr Richard Lee, MD answered: "I would question the benefits of a topical finasteride, considering that finasteride is strictly a type 2 5-alpha reductase inhibitor and the 5-alpha reductase in the scalp is primarily type 1.
Theoretically, dutasteride could be effective in the treatment of male pattern baldness as a topical medication, but we would first have to know if dutasteride is properly absorbed into the scalp and, if so, if it retains its pharmacological actions.
Richard Lee, M.D."
