When dietting, are these two diets the same

DIET ONE:
Junk food, take-out, chocolate = 1500 calories consumed a day

DIET TWO:
Vegtables, chicken, fish, fruit = 1500 calories consumed a day

Will these two diets result in the SAME amount of weight loss or NO.. explain why?

Um, I'm no expert, but the big difference I imagine is that the second diet will be enough food to actually keep you full, but with junk food you can eat 1500 calories in one meal. The first diet is also fatty, whereas the second is not.

Does it really matter how much fat, carbs etc if its 1500 calories?

1500 cal is 1500 cal.. unless someone knows more to this?

No, my point is that if you eat junk food, but restrict yourself to 1500 calories, it wont be enough food to sustain you. Unless you can eat one hamburger a day and be satisfied with that...

you know what, never mind. I'll let someone else field this one.

No, because if you do not use up/burn the stored sugar and excess fats, they will be stored into your body as fat.
Are you taking in the same amount of calories? Yes, but are they equal in nutritional value? No.
The second option obviously has more useful nutrients with less trans fat and sugars.
Last but not least, why in the world are you consuming only 1,500 kcals a day? It's a really small amount!

Calories is just a measure of energy dude. It says nothing about how rapidly that energy is burned. Junk food is laden with saturated/trans fats, insane ammounts of sodium and various other nasty preservatives/acids that you DONT want. It also tends to spike your insulin due to the simple sugars it usually contains.

Calories aren't end all be all, food sources are more important.

BUT..

It's quite logical which one has the nutrional value, better for you etc.

That wasn't the question.

The question was for WEIGHT LOSS, are they the same.. Will you lose the same of weight.. since they are both 1500 cals?

At the end of the day, weight loss is a result of calorie deficiet. Fats, oils, carbs is irrelevant to this equation.

So for WEIGHT LOSS, won't those 2 diets produce the same weight loss result?

Like i said, differnet nutrition values alter how your hormones work, and your hormones are hugely important in metabolic regulation and various other processes'.

Think about it. If you ate a 500 calorie starchy food that releases energy over 3-5 hours and compare that to eating 500 calories of mcdonalds french fries which spike your insulin and release the energy within a 1.5 hour time frame. OBVIOUSLY you'd put on more fat (or it would be harder to lose fat) eating the french fries because you'd have to burn them off in a much shorter time period before fat storage takes place.

I always have my three meals a day but I don't snack enough. Most of my meals are probably in the 500-600 kcals region, bringing my daily total to less than 2000kcal. I'm just saying that surviving on 1500 kcal a day is not that difficult.

Consuming 2500 kcal a day feels like a chore to me. I don't like having very big meals but I need the nutrients so I make an effort to have at least one big meal a day and a few biscuits or fruit in between the meals. My guess is that I consume less than 2500 most days but I go over 3000kcal on most sundays.

Diet is easy... cut out the alcohol, ditch the car and have an active lifestyle... give it a few months and the weight will start coming off..

This is actually a very good question.

Assuming that 1,500 kcals is less than what is required to maintain his/her normal weight, I think it's safe to say that both diets will cause weight loss. My guess is that if you put person A on the junk-food diet and person B on the healthy diet, after a while, their weights would be about the same. The time it would take for them to lose the weight might vary, though.

The trouble with the junk-food diet of 1,500 is that junk-food contains many calories but is not very satisfying because it has few nutrients, so person A would have trouble sticking with the diet because they'd be hungry all the time.

My hypothesis (and there is the science to back it up) is that eating less, no matter what it is you end up eating, will cause weight loss, but eating more does not always cause weight gain; especially, eating your normal calorie intake might cause weight loss, weight gain or do nothing, depending on what it is you eat.

Don't believe me? Try eating 3,000 kcal of nothing but fat and see if you gain weight.
