Are we all being deceived by the generic scam?

I've been lurking around this forum for a couple years now and I would like to share an experience I had taking generic finasteride and genuine Merck Propecia. I've been losing my hair since I was 23 and now I'm 43. My hair loss has progressed slowly over the past 20 years and I still have a descent amount of hair, but in the last 2 years my hair loss has accelerated. I decided it was time to get some medication so I went to a derm and got a prescription - he would only prescribe genuine Propecia. Taking my script to the local pharmacy I was shocked to find that it would cost almost $300 for a 90 day supply. I decided right then to abandon this idea and buy some generic finasteride online. I ordered a years supply of Cipla brand Fincar from InHouse Pharmacy and cut the pills into fourths and took it religiously every day.

After taking Fincar for 14 months my experience was this; I observed no regrowth, my hairloss did not stop or slow down and I had no sides.

A few months ago I went back to my derm and confessed to what I had done and asked for another prescription for Propecia. He scolded me and gave me a speech about unapproved generic medication. He wrote me another script.

After taking genuine Merck Propecia for 4 months now my experience has been this: My hair loss has stopped - no more hair in the shower drain AND some fuzzy regrowth along my hairline! I had some mild testicular pain around week 3 but no other sides. My conclusion is generic finasteride is either fake and/or ineffective.

Lets take a step back here fellas. It's a FACT that Propecia is effective for 9 out of 10 men. It's a FACT that half of those men experience regrowth! I'm just not reading about that level of success here on this forum, and I suspect that most of you are taking a generic form of finasteride. When you think about it the generic finasteride industry is a perfect ruse. If your hairloss stopped - it's working. If your hairloss slowed - it's working. If your shedding more hair- it's working! Generic finasteride can do no wrong.

My opinion, if you are serious about not going bald pony up the dough and get the real stuff. Do the research, you will see stories like mine everywhere. If you disagree please let me know. Thanks

Most might agree that it's not unwise to try with name brand finasteride. only if you are achieving zero benefits from it's generic alternative. We probably need to give either one brand at least one year and a half to make that conclusion in the first place. Pardon my frankness, but I believe your reasoning requires deeper scrutiny by this I mean it lacks convincing logic. If you are implying that some/ all generic forms of finasteride. are bogus products, then my comment to you is that you should do your civil duty and report it to the proper, respective authorities or at least have the product in question tested and evaluated by a qualified and competent lab. This is the only right and helpful recourse you should follow.

OP, thank you for sharing your experience. I have recently begun my research on finasteride including comparing the original brand name to the generic and Fincar is one of the options I am seriously considering as an alternative to Propecia. Now that you are taking the Propecia, do you do the same dosage as you did with the Fincar; cutting them into fourths and taking daily?

I'm taking genuine Propecia 1mg. I have a prescription drug card that reduces the price to about $200 for a 90 day supply.

I get 100 pills of 1mg finasteride for 40 bucks at Costco. I suggest you all swing by Costco and get your script filled there. You don't need a membership to use the Costco pharmacy. Cheers

If you are getting positive results with a generic please indicate what brand and where you purchased. Thanks.

I was able to get my perscription filled at walgreens pharmacy. I got a 4 months supply for $10 :p

Granted you need to live in america for this. Ask walgreens about their perscription membership program which costs $20. Then you will get cheap perscriptions.

I haven't started taking the finasteride yet. I need to start taking 1.25 mg on June 10 because it expires on Oct 10 of 2014.

This must be for generic 5mg finasteride and not 1mg. Am I right?

Just stopped by Costco in LA. Generic finasteride 1mg is only $33 for a ninety day supply. It's manufactured by Camber Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

I'm currently on brand name Propecia and have a couple months supply left. I'm torn on whether to go with the generic. It's MUCH cheaper now ($220 vs. $33) however, I've heard some horror stories on this board and others from people who have switched. Does anyone have personal experience with this?

Yeah but the sample of people who post here are mostly those for which the drug isnt working properly.. otherwise why would you be wasting your time on a hairloss forum if everything was working ok.

Therefore it is not a true 9 out of 10 sample.. there is way more of that 10% sample here than there are the 90%.

I will always buy proper brand name medication. I'm not gonna **** around when it comes to this stuff, I want peace of mind that I'm getting the real deal. Especially when it comes to pills manufactured in such reliable countries as India... I mean... do you honestly trust anything that comes out of India, and if so, why?

At the 5 month mark I'm still showing improvment with genuine Propecia. Still no more hair loss and more fuzz. Since none of us has a laboritory in our basement it's impossible to verify if a generic drug is fake or less potent. The only way for us to determine it's effectiveness is by trial, and in my opinion if you take ANY drug for a year it better show positive results or it's worthless and it's time to try something else: 9 out of 10 fellas - let me repeat, 9 out of 10! It seems almost impossible NOT to have positive results if you are indeed taking genuine finasteride.
