I don’t know much about oral minoxidil. Can someone tell me why it is considered dangerous? If I wanted to get it, how would I?

I gave oral minoxidil a try a few months ago at a dose of 2.5mg a day, but I had to stop using it after about a month because it was making my face very puffy, especially my eyes. It was making me look 20 years older than my age. My eyes got so puffy that people started commenting on it, including my dentist who thought I'd had an allergic reaction to something. The puffiness went away after I stopped using the oral minoxidil. A few other people on these forums have had this side-effect too, so if you are thinking of using this treatment, be aware of this potential side-effect. Oral minoxidil is potent and risky stuff to be putting in your body, and I would say it is definitely best to stick with low doses such as 2.5mg a day. Better to be safe than sorry.

Cheers, Michael.

That doesn’t sound good! I’ve now read a bit about it. At first, I was keen to try it. Now, I’m not so sure. More research is needed.

I’m using 10mg a day and don’t have any side effects except more body hair growth. It depends on person to person, you need to try to find out how you react.

It could have negative effects on your body over long-term use that you're not aware of yet though. It is risky stuff to be putting in your body, especially at a dose of 10mg a day.

I have to admit I'm tempted by this. If I was going to try it, I would go with a small dose. More research is needed.

Are there any reputable hair "experts" who I could speak to about this? Anyone worth getting in touch with?

Same, doing 7.5mg / day and have been getting consistent regrowth since I started in January.

No sides, aside from feeling light headed at the very beginning.

Kind of agree with that but I'm hoping that some new treatments will be able to get me out of it in the future.

The only thing those pictures actually show is that your hair is longer. The angle that it’s taken at makes it impossible to know for sure whether the hair density has improved or if its an illusion caused the increased length, the styling, and/or a perpendular angle. If the before pic was taken from the same vantage point with that length and styling it would look very similar.

We also have no way of seeing the hairline. On that note, a hairline lost to male pattern baldness can’t be reversed, but thicker longer hair can help give you the appearance of a better hairline. If you’re only on min, this is definitely what’s going on here.

If we assume, however, that you are a great responder, there is a major issue to consider.
While it’s good that you have been able to discontinue finasteride, (thus saving its efficacy for a future date), it won’t be long before your body adapts to it. Because of the dosage and your high sensitivity to it, you’re not on finasteride when your body adapts you are going to have a massive, drastic shed.

Yes I think that's how we all feel on here. If some new effective and safer alternative to our current treatment options eventually comes out, I would throw all my dutasteride pills straight in the trash.
