Hi Guys I'm new here so let me introduce myself,
I'm a 26 year old malefrom Aus. Who recently noticed his hair line receding a ltiile more than he liked. My dad is bald, my brothers hairline is receding and my uncles are also bald.

So I went to a doctor and he gave me a prescription for Propecia but he also told me that he thought I was wasting my time and that the Male Pattern Baldness would beat me :(.

Does this sound right from your experiences? Isn't that what Propecia is supposed to combat??????

Anyway I was thinking of trying to fight it anyway. So here are a few questions.

1) I was thinking of trying a comination of things, like Minoxidil,,Spironolactone with the Propecia
2) Propecia is very expensive and I can't get a doctor to prescribe me Proscar. Does anyone know of any safe palces to buy it off the web????
Has anyone got it into Australia???
3) I'm currently using a tar based gel to stop dandruff like flaking(Psoraisis) of the scalp, its called SebaTar, would that be as good as using Nizoral? it stops the itching...

Ok guys thanks heaps.... I hope you can help.

Bobg.

Hey bobg,

I'm australian too, and my doctor basically said the same thing. MBP will get you in the end.. but (my opinion) a good 10-15 years later than it otherwise would have. Propecia, Min, spironolactone, etc etc prevents but doesn't absolutely stop hair loss.. if you look at anyone ~70years old, none of them have a full head!

I suppose you just have to put it straight to your GP, you would like Proscar, you are aware of the side-effects and would like to try it for a one year trial period. My doctor proscribed my proscar with little trouble.. perhaps if you ask him/her exactly why she won't? And if its about the varying dosage (standard bs dished out by the drug companies), tell him/her that you will accept the risks.

You got the the drift! SebaTar is not really a substitute.. you can use nizoral once a week and your tar shampoo for the rest, keeps the itches to an absolute minimum!

I have a post in the story section.. whether its working or not, I can't be sure. Some days I feel it has, other days it seems like it hasn't.

I think the individual hairs are thicker.. but its offset by the fact there appears to be less density (number of hairs) - so i guess its just part of the shedding cycle. If you do start treatment, this is a word you will get to know and dread. They come back (apparently), but only after a very long delay - so i guess some people get spooked and stop treatment. But its a bad thing, many problems can be caused by people changing routines.. so just make one (eg, mine is finasteride/min) and stick with it for a year.

I source my goodies from http://www.pharmacydirect.com.au, quite cheap as i get the generic version of minoxidil (hair-a-gain) but prescription IS required for proscar.

Hope that helps!

Apparently there are equol studies being conducted for hairloss and with hair cloneing only 4 years away we could have our selfs a chance!

Most doctors or GPs as we call them in the UK (General Practitioners) are just that, they are not specialists, It would be too much to ask them to comprehend the full spectrum of human conditions and treatments, let alone keep upto date with every new breakthrough in every field.

He like many doctors is no expert on hair loss and even less of an expert on the particular course your personal male pattern baldness may take.

You could try every know treatment from day one in double doses and lose all your hair in 3 years, you could also keep your hair in decent condition for 15 years on half a propecia a day.

Go for Finasteride 1mg a day, minoxidil 5% 2xday and a 2% Ketoconazole shampoo 3xweek. This has proven itself to be an effective regimen for many, with solid results.

I like many buy Proscar online, you can get Merck brand (not generic) Proscar from places like http://www.qhi.co.uk, they are based in London (20 minutes walk from me!) but ship internationally, I believe a few people from the US on this forum but from QHI. QHI also do not require a prescription, but you must first post/fax them a disclaimer from.

$66 australian dollars will buy you 28 Proscar, which chopped into 5ths will give you 140 doses or around 4-5 months supply.

nobody has ever got Proscar in Australia, ever, never ever ever, nobody, you will be the first.

This shampoo you are using will help, but Nizoral will help further, the active ingredient in Nizoral (Ketoconazole) a mild anti-androgen.

Its anti-androgen effects are said to influence hair growth similarly to Minxoidil 2%

This action is enhanced by combining Nizoral with a Salicylic shampoo like T/Sal (that's T/Gel with salicylic acid in the UK not sure about Aus)

Quote from Dr Lee website: Ketoconazole has been proven to decrease the quantities of DHT in the scalp by helping to inhibit its synthesis from sterols.  Salicylic acid has a keratolytic and a slight antiseptic action when applied topically to the skin.  By removing some of the dead epidermal layers of the stratum corneum, there is an enhanced action by the ketoconazole in suppressing the production of DHT in the scalp.

Most doctors don't know a hole in the ground from their a**h** when it comes to hairloss. Propecia is the best thing for hairloss period. Ok ok minoxidil too. Get on the old nizoral train if you decide to start with the finasteride too.

don't worry!!! it is only an example of how broad the spectum of response is, some people respond very well to hair medications, some don't respond so well.

No, I am just joking with you :) , you should be fine, it's just a hair loss drug, I am sure thousands (if not more) of packets are being posted to a country the size of Australia every week.

good luck.

G'day mate,

I'm in melbourne. Been on propecia for 2 years with mixed results. Like the other bloke said, somedays you think its working a treat, then others it looks like sh*t. I've just started up with Avodart as well so we'll see how that goes.

Use the minoxidil if you can afford it. The sooner you get on it the better. Nizoral will cost you around $15 for a 200ml bottle. I'd get onto that too, again if you can afford to.

As for the proscar, my doctor has offered it to me before. Do some doctor shopping and you'll get it easy enough, or like the others said, get it off the internet.

Good luck mate

Hey Guys,
I just realised that my health fund wil cover up to $450 in prescription costs at year.
so if I was to buy propecia at retail ~$67 I would be $366 out of pocket a year for it.... I guess thats not too bad.

hey bobg, why pay $366 out of your own pocket, money which you could spend on a few hundred cans of cheap supermarket brand beer, when you can get a years supply of finasteride for under $200? + you will still be covered for up to $450 worth of life saving drugs when your liver fails from the beer.

Yeah thats true, and my halth cover would cover that too, so I would probably be paying less than $100 a year. BUT the problem is I don't have a doctor to prescribe me proscar. I live in Sydney.... :(
