Avodart + Procecia? Too Much??

HI all,

Some will call me stupid for this, but thats fine. I've been on propecia for around 2 years with decent results. It slowed my hairloss (diffuse thinner). I've been on minoxidil for around 6 months. A couple of months ago, I thought what the hell, I might throw avodart into the mix also, just to see what happens.

So I'm now taking propecia daily (1mg). minoxidil 5% once a day. I'm taking avoadrt (.5mg) every 2nd day and nizoral on the head every 3rd or so.

Since I've kicked off with the avodart, I've had massive shed. This never really happened on the propecia. my question is: Could I be taking too many anti-dht drugs for my own good, and thus shedding? I suffer no side effects so don't worry about those. Just from a hairloss point of view.

Since i'm still on the propecia, I don't really understand how I could be losing ground? I'm still taking everything i used to take, but more.

Any comments greatly appreciated guys, thanks

No idea for sure but there's a basic principle in science that too much of something can kill it. Examples of the top of my head are codine and working out. 1. Codine is used for a sleeping agent in cough syrup or pill form. You take the recommended dosage and you fall asleep easier. If you exceed the recommended dosage, it can kill you.

Working out. You are only supposed to lift enough to tear the muscle and then allow it time to reform. If you are lifting everyday, which sounds good, you'd be surprised to find out it isn't. Your muscles have to have down time to recover and constant stress doesn't allow that and so you will never get good muscle size.

Might be the same with DHT inhibitors. They work fine to do their specified job under correct dosage. But once you go way over that, they may bring in new factors that end up killing your hair.

That's my logic, not scientific fact. Best of luck figuring it out. My best advice would be to call your GP or derm. They could tell you.

I use dutasteride topically and finasteride orally .Both at low and appropriate levels .Its crossed my mind a few times if indeed the strong dutasteride was a little to much because of the shedding I experienced when I initially applied it .I can only speculate that dutasteride being the stronger of the two will have more shedding effect on dht hindered hairs .As for those hairs recouping I don't know for sure yet because I need more time to mak e that evaluation but for now I wouldn't be to concerned about permanantly losing those hairs .One thing is for sure it will indeed cause more shedding because its stronger .In the long run its not a bad deal but causes more stress though .

Anything goes when you talk about topical finasteride and dutasteride .I mean there's no data and will be no data at least for a number of years .I have finasteride in capsule form and dutasteride in liquid gel caps by Dr Reedy's and simply poke a hole and squeeze the liquid out .I was thinking of trying just a small drop of pure dutasteride on a spot to see if it creates shedding and if there is any follicle benefits .

Strange post. Why use both dutasteride and finasteride? it´s basiclly the same product expect that dutasteride works two enzyms and have a much longer halflife then finasteride.

I´d stay on finasteride and forget about both and not even dream about a combo.

Nesta,

I started using both (just about a week ago, finasteride/dust) only becuase of cost reasoning. I figure if dust can do the same as finasteride at a dosage of .1 mg, than taking finasteride and dust will increase my chances of growing new hair by double and cost less than taking .5 mg dust on it's own.

I don't have pics.. and of course it's too early into my regime to tell you the benifits.. but, there are four things it can do to me..

- Kill me,
- Make it worse
- Make it the same
- Make it better

Now.. before it kills me there should be signs.. so I can make a judgement from the signs on what to do.

If it makes is worse, than I follow the same reasoning as the above.

If it makes it the same, then I try and justify the cost/benifit of the regime and figure out if keeping me with my hair at X dollars a month is worth it

If is make it better, than the cost is worth it and stick with the regime..

I will let you all know if my regime is of a benfit... finasteride seems to be working after (6 months) but, doesn't seem to be increaseing my density, and so the current regime is practiced..

Good luck to you all and a merry christmas!!!

Hey Nesta,

Thats a fair question. My reason for it is that I've had been able to hold what I've got reasonably well with propecia, so I really really don't want to lose it. People claim that both Avo and finasteride work in the same way, but Avo does both enzyems (however you spell it). But then you read a lot of stories about people swapping from finasteride to avo with bad results. I figure if I'm still taking the finasteride, all i'm really doing is adding another product that may help, rather than running the risk and taking one I now worked away.

Aside from this, I'm paying LESS for avo than I am for propecia and I have no side effects. So i fugure, what the hell...

Its good to see a few people on here are doing this combo, but are there any long term avo+finasteride people on here??

Cheers,
